Best way to cover greys

I am 34 years old and my greys have been sprouting sporadically for the last 18 months or so just behind my ears but I have now discovered they are along my parting too and they’re coming thick and fast. I have dark brown hair so they’re pretty noticeable.
im really not ready to embrace it at the moment. I’ve been using the John frieda defy grey which is a teeny bit effective I guess but I think I need something more.
ive never box dyed my hair, and I’m worried about the potential shit show I could make of it.
I also don’t have the time, inclination, or money to go to a hairdresser every 4 weeks.
what are my options? Are box dyes quite difficult to fuck up? What are the best ones to use-any recommendations please!

in my opinion, don’t use a box dye. It can damage your hair and you’ll get a visible regrowth. Have you considered having a few highlights put through it at the hairdressers? They can recommend a shade or shades that’d work on your hair. Other options are root sprays or hair mascara which can temporarily cover grey hairs.

Same here I’ve only got a couple but my hair is really dark so they stand out! I last used box dye years ago and started to have a reaction so washed it off. I was thinking maybe those brush in dyes?

Unfortunately no highlights are just going to end up with regrowth. I’ve had balayage many times as that’s minimal maintenance but no good when the roots are turning grey

I used a brown henna called it's pure. I use chestnut colour and get it from Amazon. It looks really natural. I just touch up the roots every 4 weeks. Henna is a bit messy but I love it. No nasty chemicals.

I'm slightly older than you but my greys started in my 20s.

My hair is naturally a fairly dark, ashy brown and for probably the last 15 years I've been regularly dying it dark brown, initially as I wanted to be a shade darker and liked the shine, but then more recently to cover the greys which are (of course) growing in the most visible place along my parting.

I've box-dyed and hairdresser-dyed, sometimes alternating between the two, but it got to the point of being conscious of my grey roots by week 2-3 and I got fed up of the cost and faff, so I'm now four months into letting my natural hair grow out. Some days I love it, other days I don't, but what's most annoying is the demarcation line of my last dye job as it's a bit darker and brassier (hair dye always fade warmer,) than my natural colour that's coming through and that's making the regrowth more obvious, even on the non-grey.

I actually wish I'd embraced it and started growing my natural hair out sooner, so there was less contrast with the dyed section!

I'm seeing more and more younger women with natural grey hair and I think it looks amazing. I think it's the confidence in embracing themselves and sticking two fingers up to the idea that women aging is somehow shameful!

go to the hairdressers, get the students to do it if they have a student day. They are under the supervision of the boss and its not hard for them anyway. They know what they are doing. Its cheap too.

I'd try a semi-permanent box dye, there are loads to choose from.

Hardbackwriter · 01/10/2024 15:03

I use semi-permanent dye (specifically, Casting Creme in Iced Chocolate) and find it pretty straightforward and quick to do. I'm happy with how it looks and find because it fades the re-growth isn't too harshly obvious. Like you, I'm not ready to embrace it yet...

Have you ever heard of grey blending? It’s becoming much better known. The aim is the blend the greys and leave it longer between colouring appointments. Look at Rosie Baylis Hair on instagram if you’re interested.

GogAndMagog · 01/10/2024 16:45

Use the Demi permanent ones. I managed to kept grey less noticeable with this type for a long time.

Casting is good.

Then if you retouch roots, don't use a whole box, mix equal parts in a bowl and get yourself a tinting brush.

I use nice and easy blond and streak it through my hair. I've now got blond/ silver streaked hair. Best colour it's ever been.
