Winter coats - possibly adaptive

First time on Style and Beauty but it seems friendly here!
I need help finding a winter coat please. Possibly it needs to be an adaptive brand, but the ones marketed as wheelchair coats/ ponchos mostly look like tents.
My requirements:

  • properly waterproof, and preferably warm, or at least I can buy a size up and put a few jumpers under it
  • suitable to sit in in a wheelchair, so either cropped or at least knee-length, because if it stops somewhere along the bum or thighs it rubs. I think i'd prefer cropped as I already have a warm leg cover, but could be converted. Also because I can put a cropped jacket on sitting down, but again, not a dealbreaker.
  • sleeves that are easy to slip on. Not sure how to describe this, but I'm thinking maybe wide sleeves or with some kind of smooth lining. There's a technical term, but basically my arms and hands stop working properly periodically, especially when it's cold.
  • Easy fastening. I can't fit the bottom of a zip together when my hands stop working. I could do velcro but not poppers. Maybe something where there's a zip I can use on good days but solid velcro for bad days? I found one with just velcro but it was the wrong length. Apparently you can have either dodgy hands or dodgy legs 😅
  • If it is poncho style, it needs to have something to stop it blowing up and away in the wind. I have a bundlebean poncho atm and it's okay in the summer but the wind just comes underneath.
I know that's a lot but if anyone could save me from losing my mind on google, it's hopefully you lot! Even if it fits some but not all of the criteria, I can have a look. Oh and ideally I'd like to be vaguely stylish. I don't mind if it's styled for men or women, bright colours or dark, but I don't want to look like I've been draped in a groundsheet or can't choose my own clothes.

Are the sleeves on this wide enough ?

Oo maybe! They do look baggier than ordinary shell type sleeves, thanks. And the closure flap is quite wide so if I could persuade my hands to do poppers it could work, or I could add some velcro

Have you seen the Dryrobe adapt? It's two pieces so you can use the lower part as you wish, but zips to the cropped top so no cold middle. Sleeves are wide and it has tags on the zips to make it easier to do up

Or I wonder if I could get magnets sewn in? hmm

Oh that looks amazing, very warm as well.
It's the getting the zipper to fit together I have the most trouble with. But definitely something I could work with or adapt, thank you!

I've always thought the sleeves looked quite short on dryrobes though, I have long arms

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 27/09/2024 14:33

If getting zips together is an issue, it's easy to get someone to sew loops on to stick your thumbs through, or the wonderful mag zips www.activehands.com/product/magzips/ just click together which is more to get someone to replace them in, but is soo easy in the long term

CMOTDibbler · 27/09/2024 14:34

And the sleeves are def full length on the Adapt btw

WinterCoatsHelp · 27/09/2024 14:36

Okay @CMOTDibbler you are brilliant, I wouldn't have known to even look for mag zips to fit to other things! I'd only seen them on one amazing but absolutely extortionate coat shipping from the USA. Not a problem to get them fitted, I could do it myself on a very good day or get my sister to do it. This massively increases my scope of jackets and jumpers and coats to choose from, thank you so much!

I would contact Dry robeor similar brands Ruggar robe is made in the UK I think. If you tell them of your needs they might be interested in adapting one for you. It doesn't do them any harm in knowing about a potential market they aren't serving

That's an idea, I might well try. Even if they don't make one, it's worth them knowing that their adaptive coat could do with another adjustment. I don't think it's unusual to be a wheelchair user who also can't fit zips some or all of the time

Something like large duffle toggles might be a better closure than a zip, if the material bit that goes under the overlying material was longer you wouldn't get wet either

WinterCoatsHelp · 27/09/2024 14:43

On duffle toggles don't you usually have to be able to hold both sides still? I haven't had one since I was about 4 so I'm not too sure. Maybe there's an ideal size that's small enough to do one handed but big enough to do with reduced dexterity

OP posts:
Singleandproud · 27/09/2024 14:47

Hmmm maybe but the ones on my coat are chunky as are the loops it goes through I think I could do it one handed. Can definitely do it with thick gloves which I'd have to take off for a zip

WinterCoatsHelp · 27/09/2024 14:50

I'll have a look then, it is a bit like operating through thick gloves

@WinterCoatsHelp Active Hands have an incredible range of stuff - the guy who runs it is an engineer who became quadriplegic and so they have solutions that really address real life problems with hand impairments. If they don't have what you need, they are also super helpful in recommending solutions or alternatives

WinterCoatsHelp · 27/09/2024 15:12

@CMOTDibbler when my next PIP comes in there might well be a bit of a shopping spree at active hands! Eyeing up the knives as well.

Thought I'd update this for anyone else looking for a wheelchair coat.
The dryrobe adapt is excellent and does what it says on the tin. Despite the advertising (cos obviously active manual chairs are considered "cooler" by the non-disabled), I think it's likely best for powerchair or non-active users, it is quite bulky. It keeps me warm and dry, as long as I get into it whilst warm - it's like a sleeping bag, very good at maintaining temperature but obviously whatever you wear in a powerchair you don't warm up once you get going. I'm a size 12, 5'9" and got a medium, which fits well with space for a couple of jumpers underneath.
I like that the sleeves are wide for ease of dressing but I can velcro the cuffs around the cuffs of my gloves so I'm fully enclosed. You do get a draft up the sleeves if you're not careful to do them up properly.
It's easy enough to wipe clean if mud splatters up. I also like the loops in the pockets to hook my keys onto, and the pockets themselves are warm lined so if you forget your gloves you can at least keep the non driving hand warm. It also just about fits into the gap under my wheelchair if I'm somewhere all day without a coat rack, although I can only do that on a good day as it's quite a squeeze compared to smaller coats. I could maybe zip off the top half and hang it on the back as usual then just fold the bottom half underneath.

My only minor gripes are that the zip off point for the bottom half is a little lower than I would like, I'd prefer a more cropped top part. But most of my height is in my legs so that will partly be me. And the hood is warm and waterproof but the lining is textured and immediately ruins my hair, so I'll probably get someone to line it for me. The zip obviously isn't for me, but I've found I can leave the bottom zip done up for a few inches so I only need to replace the zip of the top half. (I did email them and they said they'd consider a magnazip in future versions).
I very much like being able to do it up round my feet, but the toggles are a little stiff for my hands. They are getting slightly easier with use, but I feel it's an area of design that could be reexamined. Being able to toggle it up is quite key as it gathers the fabric away from the front wheels.

@WinterCoatsHelp I'm so glad the DryRobe works for you, and hopefully they listen to your feedback on the magzip as they are one of those things that just makes sense for everyone
