Who are you influenced more by influencers on social media, traditional media like magazines and their websites or what you see out and about?

I have kind of become accustomed to things going viral and that being a selling point but thinking about it I think I am more influenced by traditional magazines and their websites than influencers even though there is considerably less fashion magazines now than what there was.

I haven't flicked through a magazine in over a decade, and I don't go to their websites. For me, I was influenced by colleagues. I'm in a large team and there are some very creative women in it. But now I've found my look, I think it it as being like a signature scent. It's just "me".

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/09/2024 16:03

I don't look at inluencers, let alone follow any. I only have an Instagram account because if there are links to anything on Instagram what you can see is limited if you don't have an account but I don't follow anyone there. I don't have a Facebook or X account.

The only fashion and style writers I look at in The Times and Sunday Times and occasionally the weekend Guardian. I subscribe to round ups and blogs from Dick's and Frontiers in Edinburgh, Envoy of Belfast, YBD (Young British Designers) and brands I like.

GettingStuffed · 22/09/2024 18:45

I buy what I like, I rarely take inspiration from other people.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/09/2024 22:19

I love watching fashion content on TikTok, but don’t follow many people on there or on Instagram I would consider an “influencer”. I subscribe to Grazia and Red magazines and enjoy the fashion in those, and also read Who What Wear most days (but find their obsession with looking French or “expensive” annoying).

This is something I truly hate about living in the sticks. While in London, I absorbed fashion movements by osmosis. I used to work in a fashion-related field and am very good at picking up hints on which way things are headed, but I can't do that if I'm not seeing the hints!

Living in the Town That Time Forgot handy for my first 10 years here, as I was stony broke so wore the universal outfit of leggings + a tunic from Ebay. I'm still on a really tight budget but can stretch to a few mid-price things (and some cheap nonsense for purposes of short-term updates). I keep making mistakes, though, as I'm trying to re-train my eye via threads on here and the occasional designer website. Plus, it's hard to do all clothes shopping online.

I really don't want to be all angsty about whether a look is In or Out, or Wrong For My Age And Size but I'm missing the continual input from up-to-date people and nice shops. I want a permanent video feed from somebody who walks around London and notices what people wear 😂

For me, now, it relies on curation under websites like MyTheresa

I agree. If something is for sale on MyTheresa, or Net-a-Porter or Coggles or YBD then it's probably current. Or Liberty or Harvey Nicks. Or the higher and high end independent shops. Envoy of Belfast gets a lot of (deserved) praise on here. You (general you) might personally hate everything they sell but from a fashion point of view they're spot on.

On the high street you can probably safely assume if it's being sold in Cos or Anthropologie you're safe to buy it. I don't know about Zara, Uniqlo or H & M as I've never shopped there but they might be the same.

Then there's the brands like Ganni, YMC, Rixo, Farm Rio

floral2027 · 23/09/2024 00:53

I am ashamed to say influencers on social media like sali hughes, lisa eldridge. I have the tiktok famous oui cherie spray too lol. Now am hankering after the hermes blush that chase amie was advertising years ago.

Which is why my purchases are more beauty centric as there are a lot more beauty Influencers than fashion Influencers. My style has been exactly the same over the years- print or floral dress (seasalt/boden/joules) over tights, tunic over leggings, jumper and coat in winter, black leather ankle boots in autumn/winter and loafers in spring/ summer.

ForGreyKoala · 23/09/2024 01:23

I'm inspired mostly by people I see on the streets, but I have an idea of what I like and usually stick with that. I couldn't care less whether it is in fashion or not.

spikeandbuffy · 23/09/2024 02:33

Influencers usually. Mostly because I follow people who are similar size/body shape etc

It's really helpful to see something I would never have looked at on someone who is the same height and dress size

That's not really true, though, is it? You're on this board so you're at least interested. Things go out of fashion much more slowly than one might think, but they do. Shapes change, decoration comes & goes in various ways (I'm tipping ubiquitous embroidery/appliqué by next summer. Joe Brown's should be happy.)

The old looks come back around but, by then, my old clothes are knackered and I'm a different fit than before. The past couple of years, I've mostly been buying copies of stuff I had in the 70s and 90s!

While I was living in the metropolis, fashion updates happened organically. I'd wear the same things for years, keeping current by adding the odd item that just seemed right at the time. Now I'm having to make an effort to find out what's changed, I spend several days a few times a year doing what you might call research. And because it all feels so sudden, it's difficult not to overspend.

I miss London. I'm ridiculous: I live in Leggings & Tunic country; nobody gives a toss what I'm wearing. But I do!

rainfallpurevividcat · 23/09/2024 04:42

I couldn't name a single influencer let alone be actually influenced by them. I often, but not always, like how Claudia Winkleman and Angela Scanlon dress on TV, and I have been known to reverse image search what Susie Dent is wearing, but I don't follow them on social media. Other than that I mostly shop at Oliver Bonas and just have a look at their new season edits, though I often just buy things I like and am accidentally fashionable.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 23/09/2024 04:44

I don't have Instagram, Tiktok or any such SM. I very occasionally buy Vogue. I tend to take inspiration from people in the street and what I see in the shops. I don't do all my shopping in chain stores so have inspiration from different shops and styles. I look on websites to see what's current, but do not succumb to trend because it's trendy. I 'wear my wardrobe ' a lot and as I have some things dating back many years it makes me a bit eclectic.
Essentially, I wear what I like with an eye on the current (high) fashion and one foot firmly in the past.

@Garlictest Not exactly what you are wanting but if you search You Tube and Insta for Double Vanilla then you will find videos of what people are wearing in London and other places. It might prove to be worth a look.

Ooh, thanks, @Britpopbaby! That's my evenings (and daytimes) sorted, then!

DGPP · 23/09/2024 22:49

Weekend newspapers with their style sections, magazines and Vogue, people on the street in London, scrolling clothing shop websites

EllaPaella · 24/09/2024 12:09

Definitely most influenced by people watching. I pay a lot of interest to what people are wearing as I really enjoy clothes. I like instagram for the 'Londoners in London' type accounts which show what everyday people are wearing in different cities around the world.

henlake7 · 24/09/2024 13:15

Def not influenced by people on the streets (its all leggings and tracksuits round here!).
Not really influenced by social media in the instagram/tiktok sense because I dont have them.

I do read articles online to see whats in fashion and I am abit obsessed with YT influencers...but I tend to just sit there and judge their choices then go off and do my own thing!😃
