I bought the Nobody's Child Alexis dress on a whim and the shape really suits me (apart from the sleeves but the shoulders are good).

When I look at dresses in future what features am I looking for? I can see it is a v-neck, extra buttons at the bust which helps as usually everything gapes, it is midi length. What about the shape of the body and the skirt? It's lined too so it feels quick thick and heavy but in a good way. That also seems to mean that when the last 2 buttons are undone the skirt sticks out even more which makes the shape even more nicely (although fully buttoned is flattering too).

So how would you describe this shape (or cut?) so I can better understand what to look for. Anything I should observe regarding the materials? If relevant: I'm average height with a disproportionately large bust (but not extremely) and wide hips. I do definitely have a waist when viewed from the front but side on I have a wee bit of a tummy. This dress skims that somewhat.

It’s a tea dress.
It’s literally in the description and is a well used term to describe a dress style.

It’s not an empire style, it’s not a princess dress.

Yes, you're right it's a tea dress, but the outline is princess style. .

Good luck trying to search on any clothing store for a ‘princess dress’ and getting anything like what the OP is talking about.

OP posted an M&S link, using that as an example Princess dress results in a handful of children’s dress up costumes, vs the 250+ results that return for tea dress

Its not even a princess dress either way as the dress OP shared has a seam.

Illegally18 · 21/09/2024 19:14

I should have said that it's a Princess Line dress, or with Princess seams.

Definitely not an empire line

It is a fit and flare, with gathered bodice and skirt, set in sleeves and a waist yoke. It is the yoke that gives the nipped in look and the shirring at the rear provides the ease.
