My teenage daughter has really, really thick long hair and is miserable about it ( 1st world problems I know). What shampoo and conditioner is the best for taming this please ? ( High Street pls, not salon brands). She is driving us insane !! Just below shoulders a and he won't get it cut shorter . It's slightly layered but super thick. Lots of it . She doesn't want to straighten it every day either . Any advice ?

The Aldi olaplex dupes work on my hair (same type - lots and lots of fine hair which makes it thick and poufy)

Decent frizz serum (try Phillip Kingsley on Vinted?)

I have only got it sorted at 48 though

Try not to wash everyday - when you wash, take time to dry properly and use straighteners
Then use dry shampoo to get an extra day

Air drying or rough drying will just add to poufing if you don't finish with careful drying and a decent brush

I have similar hair and have a nape undercut. I always wear it down though as it looks weird tied back, so might not be an option if she has to have it tied back for school etc.

Is her hair curly or wavy? If so i would recommend using products especially for curly hair (there's loads available now) and also not washing it every day - i do mine every 3 days or so.

I also use my straighteners to curl my hair, it brings out my natural waves but it makes them look tamed and not frizzy.

Thanks for replies. She only washes twice a week and uses straighteners then. It has a slight kink in it ( you'd think the end of the world had come because of this kink ! ) but not curly. Anyone else ? Might try the Aldi oliplex dupes.

Cutting out silicones completely calmed my poofy hair. I also try and avoid sulfates, but silicones is far more important for me.

Things like John Frieda and Pantene calming/anto-frizz things work for a time or two, but ultimately they dry out the hair (more frizz) and build up on the hair (more knots).

There are really cheap options - Alberto Balsam shampoos and conditioners are sulfate and silicone free. Basically read the ingredients and avoid anything ending in -cone, -conol, -ane (unless they happen to have PEG- at the beginning of the name!).

Some common ingredients to avoid include dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, dimethiconol, phenyl trimethicone, amodimethicone, and cyclodimethicone.

This has transformed my hair and my daughter's hair.
