Do you wear the same coat and shoes for work and outside work

I do have seperate clothes for work and outside work as I like to look and feel differently when I'm not at work. I need to look smart for work but I still keep things seperate.

However, with coats and shoes I tend to wear the same for work and outside work, mainly because these items are more expensive. I like good quality coats and leather shoes which are better for my feet. If I bought cheap shoes for work they would hurt my feet, wear out quickly - the same goes for coats, especially in winter I like coats that will keep me warm at all times and cheaper coats don't.

I am raising this because a friend of mine has commented about one of my winter coats which is weather proof so I wear it quite a lot in the winter months.. It's a nice padded coat with a fur hood from M&S, cost about £90.00 at the time, about three years ago, yet she calls it my 'black anorak' and says it doesn't look smart and looks like a work coat.

Also I don't have space for lots of coats, I live in a one bedroomed flat and my wardrobe isn't massive.

I wear the same coats in and out of work but shoes tend to be different for work or outside of work.
I have to be smart ish for work and tend to wear the same sort of variation on a theme but I wear whatever coat the weather wants me to wear.

I have work coats and out of work coats...never used to but now in older l have a bit more money. I basically downgrade my current coat to a work one when l get a new one every few years l also have a long black wool coat that l wear occasionally in winter when going out somewhere nice, had it for years but it's not really good for work.

I never mix work coat/shoes with regular (Im NHS so consider work to be a manky environoment!LOL).
I have got a 'new' work coat this year. Picked up a lovely thick puffer style from Regatta off Vinted for a fiver. Total bargain!😄

Your friends is pretty rude. People can wear what they like, and this coat anyway sounds pretty neutral.

I would suggest that this comment is all about her and not you.

I used to be like you and have limited coats that went with everything. Nowadays I enjoy having lots of outerwear, all supplied via Vinted. Neither approach is wrong and quality over quantity seems like a perfectly good philosophy on it.

somethinggotmestarted · 19/09/2024 11:37

I have some work stuff but mostly it's all mix and match, as I don't have to dress formally for work.

The coat you describe does sound like a work/school coat ie practical, and would look a bit odd over a cocktail dress, but can't see why it would be a problem for a catch up? I'd still wear it day to day.

Thank you for your replies.

I do have a Teddy style coat that I tend to wear just outside work but my other coats I wear for both, especially my waterproof one with the hood as that is very practical in bad weather. Its the same with summer jackets, though I do have separate cardigans for work. Shoes I find hard to seperate as I do tend to pay more for good ones.

Yes I do wear the waterproof coat for day time, shopping, meeting friends etc. Going out dressed up I would wear a different one.

Yes my friend can be rude. She emailed me the other day for a chit chat and as a PS she wrote that the long skirt I wore on Saturday afternoon looked really good but the rucksack I was carrying spoilt the look. She has a thing about rucksacks. In fact the highest professional women where I work, very smartly dressed, also wear rucksacks.

Ignore your friend, she's being rude. Actually, don't ignore it, tell her 'Stop making negative comments about my appearance, I find it upsetting'.

FWIW I can wear what I want to work and so have no distinction between clothes. I have lots of shoes and coats but with the exception of very obvious going out clothes (e.g. I have a pair of sparkly gold party shoes that I haven't worn to work) all clothes are suitable for work from scruffy trainers, sweatshirt, and jeans to nice dresses depending on my day.

TimelyIntervention · 19/09/2024 13:05

Your friend needs to fuck off. Seriously, why are you putting up with her being so rude?

I have a handful of coats/jackets of varying warmth, waterproofness and smartness. I wear whichever is most suitable, whether or not I’m on my way to work is only part of that equation.

mumto2teenagers · 19/09/2024 13:08

I tend to wear the same clothes in and out of work, but our dress code at work is very casual.

When I buy something new I wear it out of work first, but after a few times wearing it I wear it to work, same with shoes and coats.

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/09/2024 13:10

I wear the same coats and shoes because I have a limited number of coats due to weight gain and a limited number of shoes that fit following a broken ankle that still gives me problems.
I don't actually buy "work clothes ". I buy something because I like it. I wear it out and about socially and then I start wearing it to work. My office is casual and I only go in once a week.

henlake7 · 19/09/2024 13:34

Def sounds like a rude friend.

I think if you are going to comment on somebodies clothes unsolicited then you should only say positive/nice things...
even if somebody asks you your opinion you can be nice about it.

Comefromaway · 19/09/2024 13:49

I just have coats.

I'm currently mostly wearing my trench coat to work and outside work but if I am walking the dog or popping to the shop I will wear my white denim jacket or I might wear my leather coat if I'm going to a gig or something.

When the weather gets worse I will wear my long wool coat anywhere I want to look smart and my Barbour puffa coat for dog walking or anywhere I am going to be out in the cold and rain.

But I also just have clothes, I tend to wear certain things mostly to work but not exclusively. I will wear black trousers or a skirt in different ways, with a smart top/blouse for work, with a dressy top for going out or with a t shirt/jumper for casual.

Spacecowboys · 19/09/2024 13:53

Yes, I have specific work clothes, coat and shoes. I don’t wear them outside of work.

StamppotAndGravy · 19/09/2024 15:15

Funny, for me work costs are much smarter (wool and trench coats) which get downgraded as they get tatty. I work in an office though so don't have to bundle them up into a locker

SusanSHelit · 19/09/2024 15:25

I work in the NHS but don't have a work coat, the coat never comes into the ward, and with nhs wages I don't have the money or the space for extra coats. I have work shoes I wouldn't wear outside of work though. An utterly hideous but incredibly comfortable pair of nursing crocs. They are very practical, can be chlor cleaned when bodily fluids get on them on the ward, and the only shoes that don't have me hobbling in pain at the end of a 12 hour shift

Princessfluffy · 19/09/2024 20:30

I think you need to tell your rude friend to keep her unsolicited criticisms of your clothing choices to herself. This isn't normal friend behaviour.
