Where can I get Blistex!?

This relief cream has disappeared off of the shelves and it's the only product that keeps my lips from peeling/cracking/itching. I have tried various different products that just don't work. Anybody know where I can get some that doesn't cost an arm and a leg or can suggest a suitable alternative?

Sainsbury’s stock it, as does Amazon.

I use carmex, but have seen blistex in home bargains and superdrug x its good stuff

Danikm151 · 18/09/2024 20:10

I noticed it’s gone from the shelves too. I should have stocked up the last time i got some!

Apologies I should have attached, it is this one that I cannot find anywhere.

Home bargains

I needed this recently and the pharmacist said they can’t get hold of it. She sold me Cymex which is marketed for cold sores but does also say it treats dry lips. It has worked for me.

Another vote for home bargains.

HedgePigWig · 18/09/2024 20:49

It vanished last year too but then came back in home bargains after months.

So, these are the active ingredients of the product:

active ingredients w/w: aromatic ammonia solution6. 04%, strong ammonia solution 0.10%, liquefied phenol 0.494%. also contains: white soft paraffin, modified lanolin, sorbitan palmitate, polysorbate 40, peppermint oil, sodium saccharin, ethanol 96%, racemic camphor, cineole, purified water.

I have no idea why it is good to put ammonia on your lips - unless it is being used as an antiseptic for chapped lips - in which case you could use any cheap antiseptic. Otherwise the major ingredients seem to be white soft paraffin (you may know this as a brand name - vaseline - and lanolin (in most nipple creams). The rest of stuff is probaly preservative, flavour and stuff to create the texture. I am mindly baffled by how ethanol can be a component of a lip balm but it seems to be in everything.

In summary, try a petroleum jelly or a lanolin product. Read the labels.

Things I have tried so far are O'Keefes lip repair, Elizabeth Arden overnight intense repair, Lanisoh, Vaseline (awful), blistex intensive moisturiser, bondi sands spf lip balm and cymex cold sore cream (I don't currently have a coldsore but with them being itchy and dry I thought it was worth a go).

All of the above are fine to use on already healed lips. I'm not sure why it's a good idea to put ammonia on your lips either but it works better than any other formula I have used and if it has been discontinued I will have lips like a flapjack forever more.

Try nuxe lip balm it’s not as good but it’s pretty decent.

'Lips like a flapjack' has made me laugh, good description!

FrangipaniBlue · 18/09/2024 22:35

Every pharmacy in my town claims they can't get it and try to sell me cymex (it's shite).

It's in abundance in the local home bargains!
