SPF Moisturiser Recommendations

I'm in need of pointing in the right direction for a new SPF moisturiser.

For a while I used L'Occitane Immortelle Precious with SPF20. It was lovely - smoothed my face and felt amazing, not at all greasy. Plus I got it on massive sale at about £45.

However, they seem to have taken out the SPF element now, meaning I can't replace it like for like. Plus I've started using retinol so heading into the summer I was looking for something else with a higher SPF. I tried Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Light Essence (SPF50) as it seemed to meet my requirements of a light moisturiser with SPF, and the reviews were very complimentary. I found some on Amazon for £10 so didn't mind taking a punt.

I hate it! It feels like suncream and doesn't visibly do any smoothing. It just makes me shiny and uncomfortable!

Can anyone recommend a light, SPF moistuiser with an equivalently lovely texture to the L'Occitane? Ideally I'd like to be able to try a sample in a shop if it's a high price.

Ultra Violette queen screen is an spf serum, also works as a moisturiser and make-up primer. Might suit you, but tends to be better for dry skin otherwise might feel a bit too greasy.
Otherwise Elemis marine cream spf 30 feels wonderful, very light weight and pleasant

It may not be what you are looking for but I really like the Garnier Ambre Solaire factor 50 spray that you use over makeup. It means I can use whichever moisturiser I want and then finish off with a spray of that as a final step.

I should say that I don't ever wear make up, and have fairly balanced skin. So far the Elemis is sounding like the best bet, thank you!

Hello - just to highlight that many moisturisers containing SPF do not have a high enough level or full spectrum of SPF A and B to use effectively with retinol/tretinoin. Even if they say they are 50, in reality they are not. I use tretinoin and I use La Roche Posay invisible fluid SPF50 every day over a non-SPF moisturiser. So something like that could be an option for you. It's a great product - you don't need loads, it doesn't have a strong smell and it absorbs easily. They also do a spray mist version.

scatterbrain3000 · 17/09/2024 13:09

Thank you, I'll look at that too then. I'm not completely against seperating the products if it will help me get the effect and feel I want.

What advantages do spray mists offer? Do they tend to feel pleasanter?

Never sure how much to worry about SPF come a Yorkshire winter working from home and barely seeing the daylight!

I have always liked the Clarins moisterisers with SPF - although I think it's only 25 or 30. great for day to day, but if I'm actively out in the sun I'd apply on top. Depending on age and stage, pick the. moisteriser that works best for you. I like the one in the pink jar but am sort of moving towards the red jar.

On the more cheap and cheerful front, the Nivea ones have always been good and I've used a Simple SPF 50(I think) which is pretty good too.

I really like Cerave facial moisturiser, you can get it in spf 30 or 50, it’s cheap so you can maybe just give it a try and see if you like it.

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 17/09/2024 14:22

The No 7 future renew range has a nice moisturizer with SPF in it. But they also do a separate specific facial sun screen that's SPF50 and I've used instead of moisturizer all summer. It feels and goes on like moisturizer. Really light.

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2024 17:01

If you wear makeup ALTRUIST also have a primer with SPF50 in it - I used this on holiday in Greece and was very happy with it.

I use this.

Oooh, does this mean it doesn’t result in watering, burning, red rimmed, crusty eyes? I’ve not worn SPF on my face for the last few years because of this (made worse by the fact I wear contact lenses), and my face is a right old state!

Fluffywabbits · 17/09/2024 17:10

I'd second the suggestion for Boots No7 Future Renew. It's not too greasy which I find with some other products that contain SPF. Also doesn't cause pilling when worn under foundation.

Londonmummy66 · 17/09/2024 17:11

I quite like the Cerave mentioned above but prefer the texture of Avene with SPF 30 - they do a light and a rich version - about £15.

RobinEllacotStrike · 17/09/2024 18:45

@AllTheChaos yes I get that reaction from lots of SPF too - I can't use Roche La Posy stuff for example. But I'm fine with the aultrist products containing SPF so it might be worth a try.

For full on sun cream in the summer I find Skinnies ok too.

AllTheChaos · 17/09/2024 19:54

Thank you, @RobinEllacotStrike , I will give these a try

DoubleShotEspresso · 17/09/2024 20:08

Contact lens wearer here and second Altruist SPF 50 Moisturising cream, honestly brilliant stuff.
Also love Freezyderm under make-up, this is not a moisturiser as such, more velvet texture but really smooths out imperfections. Both last ages.
