Skin routine, please help!

So I currently have no skin routine other than micellar water to take my make up off in the evening, I very occasionally use moisturiser if I remember.... which I don't 99% of the time.

As a gift I have asked for some nice skin care products, as i feel like i really should take better care, but I don't really know what I should be using and when!

I'm 34, and I would say I have combination skin, my nose tends to be an oily area while my forehead and cheeks can be quite dry, especially in winter.

Can anyone please advise any products? And tips on a skin care routine?

PS Sebamed is also kind to the budget!

@UmberMoose thanks for sharing your routine! I'll have to have a nose at sebamed I haven't heard of them.

Yes you may try and see

Thanks @iloveroastpotatoes (great username by the way) for sharing your routine 🙂 I have noticed since they have started blasting the heat out at work my skin is drying out something awful! so it's interesting to see what other people are using and why. To be honest I just like having a good nose at new products too haha.

Start simple. Stay consistent. Your skin will thank you

Oily / combination skin does well with oil or balm cleansers. A face mist for the days when you're at work could help not dry your face out - not a water mist but a mist with products in. Boots do a rose water and glycerin which I put in a spray bottle. Vichy do a very nice dry touch SPF which I like, doesn't make me shiny and it's not greasy. You can use the same products in both the morning and evening to keep it simple. Just add an SPF for if you're going out. And use whatever cleanser twice on an evening after you've had make up or SPF on to make sure it's properly off.

I've just posted about my skin issues, very greasy skin. I'm loving Liz Earle, it feels like being at a spa. I got a set with cleanser, exfoliater, skin tonic (like a toner), face mask and eye cream. I still have greasy skin after a few hours but it does feel like a treat for the skin at the time

Me too, I’ve been using it for 25+ years. Many people have said I have lovely skin and I think for my age, I do. (No wrinkles or crows feet and I’m in my 50s)

I second Liz Earle…sometime on 3 for 2 as well.

Boots £10 Tuesday often has it on too, I get a gift set for Christmas from my parents and then top up with any I run out of through that deal

@Livinginacatdictatorship I would recommend doing the Caroline Hirons skincare quiz first. It helped me tailor my skincare routine properly as I was using serums and products that are actually too harsh for my skin. The CH website has loads of advice, and the recommendations vary across all skincare products and price points (not just her own Skin Rocks range). I've found it really useful.

@SparrowFeet

"Start with a cleanser so you can ditch the micellar water and a decent SPF"

Is there a reason for wanting to ditch the micellar water? 🙏

I feel that cleansers either strip my skin barrier or leave a residue on my skin. So, I only use a micellar water (Bioderma). I don't wear makeup and I rinse the micellar water off.

Glitch8 · 22/09/2025 14:48

@wintersgold

"I wouldn't use micellar water, it's quite harsh and there are much better options out there."

You are the second person advising against micellar water! 🙏

I thought it was gentler than cleansers, which either strip my skin barrier or leave a residue. Any recommendations for an unscented cleanser for sensitive, redness-prone skin?

SparrowFeet · 22/09/2025 15:19

@Glitch8if you're rinsing it off that sounds good. I say it more for people who are just putting it on a cotton pad and swiping over their face - it won't remove everything and it will leave a residue no matter how gentle. I'd use a wash off cleanser like cerave following a balm cleaner like take the day off, but it does sound like you're doing the right thing by using the micellar as a wash off anyhow.
