A good (maybe obvious) trick for light packing is NEVER to bring anything that creases. Lightweight uncrushables that can be rinsed and dried overnight (If necessary) are great. I use shampoo or shower gel to wash out bits n pieces, no need for anything else, and you will have that with you or supplied by the hotel. No one, and I mean no one will give a damn what you wear, they are too busy looking at themselves.

For short breaks up to 4 or five days I use a Cabin Max Metz for Ryanair underseat, and Cabin Max Manhattan for Easyjet. Both the correct size, and you would be absolutely amazed at how much fits in there. We really do bring far too much with us, much of which we don't use in the end!

But if it is just a bit too stressful trying to fit all you want in the underseat bag, by all means bring an overhead case. I'm not trying to be competitive about who can bring the smallest bag for a years travel or anything! But I learned that we really need very little when I did a few stages of the Camino in Spain some years ago.

You know what? Pay for the additional suitcase. Save yourself the headache of trying to cram your luggage into a tiny bag.

I know . I don't really get these threads. Faffing around washing stuff out in the sink and buying packing cubes and what-have-you when it's £20 to take an extra small suitcase. If it's a night in Dublin I get it - but 4 nights in Marakesh, it doesn't make sense to me

it is not about the money, it is about travel with lugging lots of heavy luggage around

Well it is a bit about the money. Ryanair would charge you for oxygen if they could.

Also if you’re going to Marrakech there’s so much shopping to do ! So best to travel very light so that you can bring more treats back.

I'm the wanderer type, want to see things not sit around, and often travel alone. So on the way out I pack very light and use a correct size underseat backpack only. That makes it so much easier for me to catch trains and buses and get to and from airport to the stations etc. Easy to mind when on a train too. I don't need much and clean knickers are the most important piece of kit lol. Believe me I've tried buying some when abroad, and they are either brothel style or parachute bloomers, so I bring my own.

I sometimes pay for an overhead for the return depending on where I'm going. I have a fold up duffle size bag that yes, takes up a little room on the way out, but I can live with it, then I fill my boots with whatever I buy to take back.

I don't always need the second bag, but if I've paid for it, I'm using it!
