Looking at a down coat on sale. Returns are awkward (I.e. I'd have to pay!)
Measurements are 95-78-107
Which size would you order?

I guess the 42 but it would be a bit big? The ones below would be too small in hip?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/09/2024 10:43

Down coats tend to come up small, I'd say 42 but have you googled the brand and sizing to see what others think?

cityrookie · 13/09/2024 11:08

Reviews - some say normal and some say large.

Tricky one. Unless it is very fitted on hips, I would probably go 40. 42 would drown you everywhere else. What size are you normally and which company is this? Often these standard measurements bear no relation to the actually item I find!

loudbatperson · 13/09/2024 11:23

What is the cut of the coat?

If it is very fitted through the hips I would go for the XL. If the cut is roomier on the hips k might be tempted to try L to reduce the oversize elsewhere.

Are you likely to often wear a thick jumper under? If so go for the larger size.

Britpopbaby · 13/09/2024 13:30

Don’t forget when choosing your size to account for all of the layers you’ll be wearing.

Bjorkdidit · 13/09/2024 13:34

Obviously depends on the cut, but likely I'd say the 42. It's a sad fact that a lot of clothes are not cut for people with hips and we face a lifetime of coats and dresses that are massive on our top halves and only just big enough on our hips. But if you size down, you risk not being able to do it up.

At least you can get a jumper under it when it's very cold.

JC03745 · 13/09/2024 13:35

I too was going to say that surely that is the exact size of the coat, and isn't accounting for a shirt/jumper etc underneath?

Is there anywhere you could try it on? I'd get a 42, because otherwise, it will surely be far too tight on the hips, once you've added trousers.

cityrookie · 13/09/2024 14:25

@JC03745 I don't know. I always thought coat sizes made allowance for a layer or two underneath.

See, I find the exact opposite.

I've got broad shoulders but measure 37, 26, 36 and to get it to fit the bust and shoulders I usually have to order a size 12 or 14, when an 8 or 10 would fit my hips and waist.

Which brands cut for top heavy people?

JC03745 · 13/09/2024 16:35

Thanks for the pic OP. For some reason, I assumed it was a longer, knee length coat. The 40 might fit, but as your hips are wider, it might roll up to your waist. Are you more likely to use it when zipped up, or open at the front?

JC03745 · 13/09/2024 16:47

I know this wasn't your question OP, but if you have any of these shops nearby, you could try these on, and most (maybe all) have free returns. I'm not sure the cost of the jacket you like though, but some alternatives.

Thanks, but I don't really have any shops near me. I would plan to wear it closed, mainly to keep warm waiting at bus stops!
It's by far the cheapest down coat I've seen so I'm going to have to chance it! I did try a different brand coat at the end of last winter and the 42 drowned me which is what's making me hesitate. But it was a raincoat.

Black or blue? Which is more versatile. I currently wear mainly light blue or dark blue jeans, occasionally black. (Although hoping to get a job in which case probably mostly black jeans)
