The backbone is the newest prescription retinoid, trifarotene. This is the youngest cousin of tretinoin, brand name Retin A, famous for both acne care and antiaging. The brand name is Aklief.
Boots charges £55 for a massive 75g container. In terms of unit pricing it is about 1/3 the price of Dermatica, Skin and Me, etc - the bespoke prescription services that will send you 4 weeks of tretinoin mixed with over the counter actives in a semi-bespoke formula.
I started quite recently and am finding it good. Anecdotes on reddit show that about half the users love it; the others find it irritating. I am using it every day, but still at half strength.
The Sebamed recommended by @UmberMoose is great stuff for a secondary lotion. It blots oil and corrects pH. It is a good, gentle protector between broken out skin and the environment. I have never understood why it isn’t more popular here
