Are you in the UK? Your GP may be able to help, and give you a prescription on the NHS.

Otherwise Boots Online Doctor who are a group of licenced British doctors will give you a free consultation and then offer private prescription skincare as suitable. There are several options and you can indicate your preference(s).

The backbone is the newest prescription retinoid, trifarotene. This is the youngest cousin of tretinoin, brand name Retin A, famous for both acne care and antiaging. The brand name is Aklief.

Boots charges £55 for a massive 75g container. In terms of unit pricing it is about 1/3 the price of Dermatica, Skin and Me, etc - the bespoke prescription services that will send you 4 weeks of tretinoin mixed with over the counter actives in a semi-bespoke formula.

I started quite recently and am finding it good. Anecdotes on reddit show that about half the users love it; the others find it irritating. I am using it every day, but still at half strength.

The Sebamed recommended by @UmberMoose is great stuff for a secondary lotion. It blots oil and corrects pH. It is a good, gentle protector between broken out skin and the environment. I have never understood why it isn’t more popular here

La Roche posay effaclar range is really good, very gentle but effective

Seeing a dermatologist would be the best place to start. What looks like acne isn't always acne.
I had persistent break outs around my chin, nose, and then it began to spread to my cheeks. I was sure it was acne but the treatments for acne were actually making it far worse. The doctor confirmed that it was actually perioral dermatitis, which needs an entirely different treatment regime.

I use this sometimes and can second this

Weirdly I've also had a break out. I've been using Australian bodycare tea tree wash and lotion and it cleared it all after about 10 days.

minipie · 20/09/2024 14:31

If it’s a one off breakout and unusual for you, then suggestions of roaccutane aren’t appropriate (also wouldn’t be given to you).

Agree with the poster who said consider whether it may be something else. She mentioned perioral dermatitis, rosacea is another possibility and quite common for this to crop up in 30s and 40s women.

For over the counter acne treatments I would recommend Cerave face wash and Acnecide cream. If that doesn’t help at all then it may not be acne. If it is acne these things should help some, but may not shift it. La Roche Posay Effaclar is not bad but more drying than Cerave IME.

Next step is doctor to ask for prescription options - my choice would be Epiduo cream and the pill Dianette, or perhaps antibiotics (although they mess with my gut).

Ghilliegums · 20/09/2024 14:57

Yes I think mine is roseacea. Tea tree oil is supposed to be very helpful which is why I bought that particular stuff. It seems to be working I've also cut down on all the sugar I was eating

I had adult acne and got very strong anti-biotics from the GP. Nothing else worked.

Be careful with the antibiotics as sometimes when you stop it it comes back again.
