Products for short crazy hair post chemo

I lost all my hair last year and now, 6 months in remission, I have about 2-3 inches of crazy, curly, half brown half white frizzy hair. As much as I'm desperate to grow it, I'm planning to go the hairdressers for a trim because the back is now quite long while the top is still short and just growing straight upwards!

Can anyone recommend any products to help tame it while it grows?

I honestly don't know whether to try and straighten it or curl it or just embrace the frizzy waviness. It's too short for tongs or straighteners really (although I'm thinking of buying some mini ones?) and if I brush it, it goes all poofy. If I leave it to air dry it makes me look like a mad scientist. I'm fed up of hair bands and wigs are hot and itchy. I've bought some wax but I don't really know what to do with it!

Any tips?

Could you post a pic (and edit your face out) so we can get an idea?

No advice (I am awful with hair) but justice wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS for finishing chemo. Hope you’re doing well.

Definitely have a cut. I was reluctant to do so while i was growing back after chemo but it looked so much better when i did. I use lush 'infra wig' which is ok but feel like there is probably better out there

Summerhillsquare · 11/09/2024 16:05

Oh it looks fine. A nice pixie cut would be good. I have started using Maria Nila products for my dry flyaway hair and they're amazing.

If you have it cut into a short pixie, you can use the wax on the ends to give it some texture. Then if you want to keep growing it, you can find lots of pics of ways to morph from pixie into something longer (usually keeping sides and back short while you grow the top layers longer). Congrats on finishing chemo!

Thank you it's good to hear this from someone who's been through it - it's so painful to cut it when I've spent a year willing it to grow! But I know deep down it's the right thing to do

Well done on finishing chemo!
I'm growing my hair, it's soft fluffy and fly away, I've been recommended rosemary oil, you can use it on its own or you can find shampoo and conditioner that contains it.
I find the back grows quickly for me, so feel the need to have that trimmed more often, I'm very Princess Diana right now 😂

I remember going inti hairdressers all apologetic like 'i don't know if you can do anything with this' but some strategic snips later and i felt loads better about it !

It's so difficult after chemo, and it goes curly next.

I put hats, like velvet chemo beanies from Amazon, over it for a while though ended up having the cut curls out. The only product I found that helped was Kérastase Discipline, Smoothing and Anti-Frizz Holding Spray which is pricey but lasts a long time. Though I am much further out and just use it on the odd bit. I did get haircuts but 2 weeks after looked like I hadn't bothered. But the first haircut was worth it. It's a bit trial and error.

Ah it's so nice to hear from others in the same position. This is giving me more confidence to get the back cut and accept that regular trims will probably be an ongoing thing - such an adjustment after having long hair for years!

@namechange0998776554799000 your money is as good as the next persons, don't go to the hairdresser's all apologetic ( or anywhere actually! ) x

SpanielPaws · 11/09/2024 16:42

Not gone through chemo but I've got very short hair, OP, and find I need a cut every 4 to 5 weeks for it to have any remote kind of shape as it just grows out at all angles otherwise. The back grows at a rate of knots and needs shaping/thinning way more than the top and front.

I've got wirey grey hair and find any kind of hair serums work well, you only need a tiny amount and I use Nioxin thickening spray before blowdrying to give it a bit of bulk at the roots. I've also got much better controlled hair since getting a Dyson hairdryer. Congratulations of finishing chemo - we were all amazed when my sister in law finished hers and her previously blonde/grey hair came back through brown and afro like. She was quite enchanted by it!

ForPearlViper · 11/09/2024 16:47

My hair is naturally poofy after washing. Definitely mad professor after night under hedge. Straighteners deflate it but on short hair it is hard to do without third degree burns. Try an anti frizz serum or balm. Rub a thin layer onto your hands to warm it up and kind of pull it through your hair. Use a tiny bit and then work up to what works for you. If you decide to grow it, the weight will start to get it to flatten a bit.

potplantsinparadise · 11/09/2024 16:48

CONGRATS on getting through the chemo!

Maybe something like hair oil, to smooth it? The one from Haeckels smells lovely.

namechange0998776554799000 · 11/09/2024 16:50

Ok I will try some serum next time I wash it. I have a Dyson hairdryer, but I'm not really sure how to use it on such short hair! I will ask the hairdresser for some tips when I get it cut
