Where to shop for high quality petite ranges

Hoolahoophop · 10/09/2024 10:16

Just that really, I am fed up with clothes that don't fit. I'd like to buy some decent quality items that will last a long while that don't need to be adjusted after purchase. But not quite ready to spend £300 + for anything other than coats.

Thanks

Bumping in the hope of replies, very interested in the same!

SunflowerJones · 11/09/2024 07:57

I don't know but I was rooting around in my childhood wardrobe at my mother's house in the summer holidays and I found a wool coat from Precis that I bought thirty years ago and it was absolutely fantastic quality and just the right fit on the arms and shoulders.

HotXHun · 11/09/2024 08:00

Mass produced clothes aren’t made to fit every individual body. So pretty much everyone who doesn’t fit some AI generated, lowest common denominator measurements really needs to have their clothes altered. 🤷🏽‍♀️

That said, brands such as:

Palava
Batsheva
Cawley Studio
Hades
Sister Jane
La Fetiche
Margaret Howell
Realisation Par

cover a wide range - either through sizing or through the scale and design of some of their clothes.

Ooooh. Following because I have been wondering the same thing and would love some ideas of where to look.

BananasAreEvil · 11/09/2024 08:08

Reiss petite

stardust777 · 11/09/2024 08:14

I'm 5"3 - the Reformation petite range fits me well.

HotXHun · 11/09/2024 08:25

I’m 5”3 and have never worn any specifically petite range. I guess it’s a matter of proportions? (Wide shoulders and long arms in my case.) And preference - I like clothes to be voluminous rather than close fitting.

Edited

I'm just 5ft and short in the waist, so I need to take up length on everything and often the shoulders to put the waist where it needs to be but that ends up making arm holes tight under the arm, which is uncomfortable and sweaty. Because of this I often wear separates, midi skirts that fall at the wrong length and tops. ALL my trousers need taking up.

Not so worried about it fitting perfectly. But for someone 5ft. just having the waist in approximately the correct position and the length about right would be a start!

Have a look at the places I’ve mentioned and see if any of them are any good?

If only because the number of petite ranges with interesting clothes does seem quite limited.

Hoolahoophop · 11/09/2024 09:59

@HotXHun I do like the look of Palava definitely and will explore more later. I think some of the other suggestions might be a little too interesting for me!

I'm quite conventional, but with a soft spot for Joe Browns 70s flowery floaty dresses.

Not particularly fashionable I'm afraid.

5’2.5 here and I like Sézane, occasionally Whistles petite, Hobbs petite for coats (find their other clothes a bit formal/work for my lifestyle), Lipsy petite for party dresses (obviously not high end quality but don’t like to spend too much on clothes that don’t get much wear) and M&S (normal size 6 can sometimes work for dresses, jeans, jumpers etc). V short-waisted but normal length legs here.

WakingAt2am · 11/09/2024 14:41

Meant to say that although I’d love to buy higher end brands, they just don’t work for my short torso. Have tried and failed many times. Reformation looks good and if you are in the US, J Crew petite is great (but returns expensive from the UK). Also Abercrombie and Fitch do good petites for every day wear.

I’m sure the clothes are great from all these suggestions, but I’m not sure they would particularly work for petites… you have to be careful with waist/hip placement, shoulder width, as well as length of sleeves/legs. Anything too bulky, shapeless or voluminous or conversely too structural/architectural can also overwhelm a small frame, along with too big patterns.

Gooseysgirl · 11/09/2024 14:49

I recommend giving The Shortlist a follow on insta. It's a new and small business run by a fellow petite lady. The clothing is not cheap but high quality, she totally gets the issues for us shorties and as her business continues to grow will try to bring prices down.

MaturingCheeseball · 11/09/2024 14:53

There are some nice Boden pieces which come in petite. They are not too petite either, as at 5’3 and a half often petite trousers are too short.

For me it’s arms, shoulders and particularly waist position. Regular-size dresses have acres of billowing back where they are too long to the waist.

I am not very youthful, but would like some “trendier” suggestions as many petite ranges are cheap and/or frumpy. Saying that, I have two pairs of Bon Marche trousers 😳 - which, amazingly, my dd purloined so they can’t be that bad!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 11/09/2024 15:09

I'm 5'2" and as well as trouser/skirt length I find sleeve length and shoulder width to be a big problem. I have a really good alterations shop nearby and have used them for years. They're not expensive so I'd far rather find an item that I really love and pay to have it altered than be limited to the 'petite' ranges available (which aren't many!)

Thanks - I've just ordered a hobbs puffa jacket in the sale to try on!

Watching with interest

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 11/09/2024 15:38

Boden petite has the largest petite range by far.

Hobbs, Reiss and Jigsaw also does.

And M&S. It is hard to find them on their website, but if you search ‘women’s petite’ they’ll come up.

on the other end of the spectrum, so does m&co.

CocteauTwin · 11/09/2024 17:06

Not trendy, however Seasalt has a decent petite range, and their stuff is very good quality. You do have to look past some of the prints, but I've got some lovely midi dresses, jackets and jeans recently. It's only available online though.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 11/09/2024 17:16

I forgot about White Stuff, their range was quite large this summer

Rory17384949 · 11/09/2024 17:27

My petite Mum likes Phase 8 petite, Precis and minuet - always god quality

Woodythewonderpony · 11/09/2024 17:37

I’ve found Ro&Zo good and reasonably priced. Karen Millen do petites but I have found them still very long🤷‍♀️

M&S are worth a look, bought a lovely dress from there recently plus I benefit from my DS’s staff discount😁

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2024 17:42

For decent quality basics I use Lands End a lot.
