Should I buy this dress?

I would get it in the red I think, and wear with black tights and black ankle boots or kitten heels. I'm 56, 5ft 3 and slim (size 8-10), and looking for an autumn / witner dress for nights out or lunches out with friends. A night out for me is couple of drinks at a gin bar, followed by a restaurant. I can't wear low cut (including most V neck) dresses because of breast cancer surgery.

One of my concerns is the material. it looks quite thick? Great for witner in theory, but in some bars and restaurents it can be quite warm, on the other hand short sleeves in winter doesnt work.

Amyway, what do you think of it, and is it worth the money? although I have a 15% off code

I had similar a few years ago in quite a bright blue - sale purchase. Very easy to wear but the colour is a bit much - primary teacher so wear it to work. I prefer the v neck one they have this year but am avoiding black and navy - finger has still hovered though!

Boden used to sell a very similar dress with contrasting 1" colour band on the princess lines, I had that in 3 different colours and wore them often. Very comfortable and the pockets super useful. I think it has a bit of a 60's vibe so I personally would prefer knee high over ankle boots unless they are sock boots.

I'll be honest its frumpy and your trying to stay away from that. That style can make smaller shapes look too boxy and boring Are you worried about button up shirt types too , could you maybe add a statement necklace if your scar was visible and it causes you to be self conscious. May I just say I think your a warrior and I don't think if your worrying about what others say or think that you should at all . What about a chiffon style dress or sinched waist type or tea dress or shirt dress or bodycon midi casual maxi types can still style those with boots and tights too 🤗 show off that figure mam 🩷

Doggymummar · 28/09/2024 20:32

I would wear if for working from home, ribbed tights and knee boots. I've just ordered three from Asda for just that purpose. I would need to check the quantity for out the house. But I imagine Boden would be fine

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/09/2024 20:36

I think it's a simple, classic shaped dress which is really versatile. I have something similar in navy from Gap which I've had for about 30 years. It's gone shiny on the elbows, but I can't throw it away!

Not a dress, but this co-ord set looks more 2024 lunch out with friends. Would only need a vest underneath and your favourite footwear. (Flat gold Mary Janes would be good.)

And this outfit looks more autumnal but is absolutely what I’d be happy wearing for lunch or a casual evening out:

Coolness & swagger then you link to those monstrosities 😂😂😂😂😂

Notasunnydayhere · 28/09/2024 23:20

I had that Boden dress a few years ago, in navy and cream. I bought it for an interview (got the job!), I'd say it's definitely more a work dress than a going out one.

HOLIDAYBABE · 29/09/2024 10:51

Buy it, sounds like yu really see yourself in it on different occasions:)

It is cotton polyester, shouldn't be incredibly warm unless you are very sensitive to polyester. The cut is clean and classic with a poppy color, will work great as a chic winter dress!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 29/09/2024 11:33

Yeah sure why not? I was expecting it to be £375 or so - as Mumsnetters nearly always post links to quite expensive things!

£70 isn't a massive amount IMO. I used to spend £30 to £40 on a dress 30 years ago - probably £85 to £110 in today's money. I had 10 or 11 dresses in that price range. I had the figure then too! 😬I was a size 10-12 (size 6-8 in today's vanity sizing.)

I think the red one is better than the black and white one sorry @MissyB1

The Zara suggestions are great- particularly the cropped jacket.

Fionuala · 29/09/2024 14:52

it's a fab dress. Buy it and enjoy it

gingercat02 · 29/09/2024 15:01

I love the Boden dress in the purple. I'm very disappointed by the comments 😕 Love the M&S one, too
Have you worn it yet OP?

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

in your opinion, not in mine. & I think the posters isn't in any place to put the previous poster down for her suggestions

BodyOdour · 29/09/2024 16:39

The Zara co-ords are hideous. The cardigan is nice.

CharlotteBog · 29/09/2024 18:56

They've used 2 models for all the different colours* and they are both 5'9" wearing a 6L.
I suppose it gives 98% of us an idea of what it won't look like on us!

*maybe it's the same dress they just edited the colour.

I like those.

I also like the M&S print dress which is out of stock online now, I was in an M&S on Saturday but not looking for clothes and mostly saw a lot of pleather clothes there.

YourDearCat · 29/09/2024 19:52

That's lovely go for it. You'll look great.

DBD1975 · 02/11/2024 19:05

I ordered it, thinking the same as you, looked hideous on me and had to return.

Laurmolonlabe · 02/11/2024 19:39

Nice weight fabric, looks like a good cut. Boden is generally reasonable quality. Mind you it's certainly not cheap, but if you like it , try it on - show a good friend and ask for an honest opinion. It should do the duty you see for it admirably- good luck.

Feduptryingusernames · 02/11/2024 22:42

Buy it, it's perfect.

Wibblywobblyses · 02/11/2024 23:01

It looks cute, trendy and good quality. Red is a warm and vibrant colour. I think it will be a good buy. It can be dressed up with accessories. They also look popular and are selling out quickly. I have some dresses like this and they are very comfortable. I wear them with heels of knee high black boots. They can be worn autumn, winter and spring time. Go for it, you are worth it.

Newliferequired · 03/11/2024 01:55

Yes it's nice

Wibblywobblyses · 03/11/2024 11:03

😍

CollsR · 04/11/2024 05:27

I like dresses too as they are a whole outfit.

To avoid feeling frumpy have some accessories to match that are fun.

I.e. plain red dress with big hot pink & gold dangly earrings and hot pink shoes. Or black and white dress with one bright colour chunky earrings and matching handbag (say in green).

FindingMeno · 04/11/2024 06:16

I like it, but when you're anywhere in menopause range, layers work better.
