Dr Marten Chelsea boots

Really like the look of them but they are a lot more than I would normally spend. Anyway, tried a pair on today and I have never felt such discomfort in my life. Staff desperately tried to convince me they would become comfortable, but what if they don’t? How can you spend £180 on boots that hurt just standing still?

My doc martens leonore are my favourite ever shoes and never hurt me ever and I’ve been hurt by many shoes including other doc martens. I just go up half a size

Lisad1975 · 06/09/2024 20:47

They are the comfiest boots I have owned. I did go up a size though. Brought last year and wear them all the time. Can’t wait to wear again ! Was so fed up with wearing boots and they go in the bin after a while is they done in !

Thistooshallpass24 · 06/09/2024 21:00

Rubbish quality, crack across the front, show wear really quickly. I wouldn't buy anything doc martens nowadays it's a fashion brand now.
Solovair are better

AWOL66 · 06/09/2024 21:58

I like their image but found they were too solid too and that they weren't breatheable even though leather. I bought black nubuck Timberland boots for work instead and they are so comfortable and let your feet breathe.

maslinpan · 06/09/2024 21:59

Fly do fantastic Chelsea boots which require no breaking in.

florenceandthemac · 06/09/2024 21:59

I have the Lenore and they were comfy from day one

CraftyNavySeal · 06/09/2024 22:00

I gave mine away after a year as they never seemed to wear in.

I got the soft leather lace up ones instead, instantly wearable.

DiscoBeat · 06/09/2024 22:01

I will never buy footwear that doesn't feel comfortable on first try. They are great for some feet but are quite unforgiving so if your feet aren't the right shape for them, steer clear!

FleaDog · 06/09/2024 22:03

Which chelsea boots were they?

I find the narrower ones (eg Flora) waaaay to narrow

However the unisex fit 2976 is a much wider it where your foo can naturally spread and rest on the sole / footbed of the shoe -come autumn and winter l live in these - yet the lace up boots are too narrow for me and hurt!

Grandmasswagbag · 06/09/2024 22:05

It's weird I've never found them uncomfortable. They start off pretty comfortable and get even more comfortable for me. I have to admit I'd be weary also if they were that uncomfortable from the 1st try on. The best pair I own are the brown matte leather ones, several years old and look as good as new. I also have the wine red colour which have seen some exceptionally good wear and tear and I've just bought a black suede pair from vinted. They are the most hard wearing and comfortable boots I've ever had. I've bought a pair of blundstones to try this year as they were very discounted in a closing down sale of a local shop, so will be interesting to compare.

gaggiagirl · 06/09/2024 22:06

Lenore owner here too. Comfy from day one and no breaking in.
The Jadons however refused to be broken and tore my feet to shreds. Had to sell them on.
I agree with PP life is too short. If they hurt in store you're not likely to wear them enough to break them in.

thaisweetchill · 06/09/2024 22:25

I've had my DM Chelsea boots for 4 years now and still look fantastic - 100% worth the money! Did you try the soft leather ones? They don't need wearing it at all and are very comfortable.

HansHolbein · 06/09/2024 22:26

I’ve been wearing the same pair of Leonore for 6 years.

Thistooshallpass24 · 06/09/2024 22:26

Blundstone boots are great, way better quality and comfortable from day one or Fly London as someone else suggested

Chocolateteabag · 06/09/2024 22:30

@Nursingadvice Schuh have some DM Chelsea boots in their sample clearance section? link heree*
They may have some marks but they put pictures up of each actual pair

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 06/09/2024 23:11

I can't think of any other brand which is so divisive. I've got the most bog standard, average width size 37.5 feet- so bog standard, so average that I can safely buy shoes and boots online and know they will fit.

Yet, the only pair of Doc Martens I've owned were so cripplingly painful I had to give them away.

Suzuki70 · 07/09/2024 09:26

I sold mine after a year. The toe was too round (I got the 2976, so nothing nicely shaped like the Flora) and they hurt my arch.

I've got Pascal Virginias and Serena's which are both fine after I bashed with a hammer.

Over40Overdating · 07/09/2024 12:02

My Chelsea DMs were the easiest to break in by far, as were the soft pascals but the others can be hell.
I’ve started buying them second hand so there’s already some breaking in and then wear two pairs of socks to break them in round the house and blister plasters for the first week of every day wear. A faf but once you hit the sweet spot it’s worth it!

Mabelface · 07/09/2024 12:04

My Alyson ones were comfy from the start and got confused the now I wore them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/09/2024 15:07

They're not Chelsea style, but the Virginia Pascals are comfortable from day one.

NormalAuntFanny · 07/09/2024 15:13

As others say Solovair and Blundstones much, much better (I have both) both in comfort and quality.

DMs really not a patch on their former selves, DCs all have a pair and they don't really last more than a couple of years if that.

AnyFucker · 07/09/2024 15:14

I bought the fur lined Leonore style 3-4 years ago and they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever had

amylou8 · 07/09/2024 15:21

I love my DM Chelsea boots. I wore them all last winter in all sorts of mud and they still look great.
I'm a 5.5 but have a 6, and I always need to take the insoles out in DMs or they rub across the top of my foot.

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/09/2024 15:33

Love them but the elastic goes.
Stick to lace ups that feel comfortable if this is a big expense.

DM said £80 to replace the elastics! I swear they cost me £100?!?
