Advice on casual autumn/winter looks for a tall, overweight, 60s, woman

Hoping someone might be able to help with some advice or maybe a few links.... I've tried searching on fashion / looks and feel quite overwhelmed with what comes back. Where might I find useful suggestions / good websites / "looks" to consider for someone like me re clothing ?

Typically autumn / winter clothes for me at home would be jeans / top / (thick jumper or sweatshirt or long cardi when cold). I'm now heading towards 60, size 22-24 though working on reducing this, and wondering whether there is anything that might suit me more / look better. Budget is not large.

I like casual clothes but think there is sometimes a too-casual look which doesn't do me any favours, especially the older I get.

I’m in my sixties. To be honest I never understand what people mean by ‘looks’ - I buy clothes I like and put them together in ways that seem pleasing to my eye.

My first thought is that it cannot be easy to find much good quality variety, on a small budget, for a size 24. It’s hard to tell from your OP whether ‘working on this’ is an active project or a vague aspiration?

Assuming you do actually have some clothes in your wardrobe, the immediate things you might do to look your best centre on grooming and accessories.

Grooming starts with looking as healthy as you can - you don’t need me to instruct you on fresh air and exercise and truckloads of fresh fruit and vegetables, etc, etc. Are you able to spend an unfeasibly large sum of money on regular hairdressing (or even just hair care)? Do you have ‘good’ jewellery that you can wear with pride every day? Do you own the best footwear you can afford? I think if you focus on these things it matters less about your actual clothes, as long as they’re vaguely contemporary, clean and ironed.

One thing - regarding the cold: get yourself one or two (or more) plain knitted beanies in your most flattering colours from:

Community Clothing

and wear them in and out of the house. They look wondrously cool and will help to avoid a winter of shuffling about under 16 cardigans …

It all depends on what your wardrobe is needed for? Is it just at home or do you work?

Don’t know if you’ve read any of these articles?

It might seem daunting to be assailed with endless photos of 20 year old catwalk models and influencers - but the information contained in the articles is probably mostly valid and valuable. If you have a clear idea of the available range of shopping options you can compare and contrast contemporary brands and make informed decisions about how you want to look, what sort of quality you’re looking for, and where to spend your money.

Thanks all, will have a go through all those links ! I think @ProperDeep hit the nail on the head about what is daunting, and what is useful to consider.

I am thinking about clothes for home, rather than work, so weekends/ evenings/ hobbies/ social things / meeting up with friends.

Shall I start your list of fabulous things? (If truly beyond your budget look for the brands pre-owned - but remember you are worth dressing well.) Just explore every brand in every article above.

https://kaicollective.com/collections/all/products/kaili-oversized-cotton-logo-printed-t-shirt-brown Kai Collective t shirt. Just get one. Layer over thin plain sweaters if necessary.

Skims maxi dress You can wear this with clumpy ankle boots and a gilet to the pub any night of the week. Plus size women look fabulous in these dresses.

This would be perfect, in fact

I'm an 18 down from a 22/24.

My casual go to's are from White Stuff, Roman, Seasalt and Joe Browns for tunic type tops - I go for a fitted shoudler/bust area of top with looser hips. Leggings are great or jeggings but they need to be the really thick ponte type - M & S and Next are great for these.

Lovelysummerdays · 06/09/2024 17:28

I think the place to spend money is on a nice pair of boots and a decent coat or a couple of flattering long knitwear cardigans. Jeans or leggings a pair of mid calf boots (I like fly London) and knee length or longer knitwear that ties together is flattering and covers up a multitude of sins. Layer up with colourful scarf. It’ll also all still fit as you
lose weight.

Excellent, thanks to all the people with suggestions, I can see a lot of enjoyable planning, looking up links and taking note of ideas will be my Friday evening!

Not keen on that t shirt shared above, it has that classic larger lady jazy pattern vibe.

This video has some good ideas about what to Edited to say look for Anne Marie LeCoueur on you tube.

I like something like this blazer to smarten up jeans, you could wear it with a thin fitted jumper for warmth in the winter. Maybe in a more wintery colour and then it could be used over jeans or a dress like the fitted one shared above.

Ah, the video won't link. Search Anne Marie Lecoueur on you tube.

It appears to be sold out in every size from size 6 upwards. It isn’t a specifically plus size brand - they just have a wide range of sizes.

(For myself I’m accustomed to plus size women on other continents feeling as free to express their personalities through their clothes as thinner women do.)

@ProperDeep

Are you also used to being condescending?

By the way your original reply seemed to assume that because the op was plus sized she obviously didn't take any care with general grooming when in fact she just asked for some clothing style ideas not how to look after herself.

Lallybroch · 06/09/2024 20:53

I found if you struggle to get boots to fit you around the calf, that Welligogs are a good buy. Nice brown leather/suede that go great with leggings or casual dresses and really comfortable and warm to wear.

Rasputin123 · 23/10/2024 14:32

You haven’t said how old you are or what styles you like.

For larger sizes have a look at Monsoon, Seasalt, Karen Millen, Phase8, SimplyBe and Fatface for inspiration.

Also search on instagram. Laura Adlington is tall ish and a similar size.

Rasputin123 · 23/10/2024 14:35

Also Long Tall Sally and Next. Vinted may also be worth a look especially if you have something that fits ask them for more detailed measurements and if the fabric has stretch etc.
