They were right.
I’ve avoided black for years but recently bought some black wide legs trousers.

Nothing goes with them except black and I’m not keen on black near to my face. OK, I have worn grey and like them with a taupe top I have but, honestly. I’m just not wearing them!

Tell me what you wear your black trousers with please before I put them on Vinted.

Anything goes with black trousers though. I don't like to wear black near my face either but still wear black bottoms but with a colour on top

Deathraystare · 06/09/2024 10:44

I don't suit black near my face but always wear either black leggings or slightly ribbed black work trousers at work. I wear brightish colour tops or plain white t shirt (mainly because not many cream coloured around). Today I have a navy and white striped top and yesterday wore a bright orange to shirt.

MerryTraveller · 06/09/2024 10:45

Trinny & Susannah were definitely right - no colour goes with black except black and it makes most pale skinned, red/blond/ mousy haired Brits look awful but they are so used to it they don't realise.
Any colour top with black trousers looks like very basic office wear.

Seas164 · 06/09/2024 10:46

I wear top to toe black most days, never with colour, only ever with white or leopard. It's what I like, I don't want to look like Trinny, and speaking of 90s TV "style gurus", it's good enough for Gok Wan and I'd rather be Caryn Franklin.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/09/2024 10:49

Bright colours with black generally looks cheap. Neutrals work a lot better - greys, cream, etc. I think khaki works too.

Chewbecca · 06/09/2024 10:55

Black trousers are such a weird item of clothing, they make some people look really cool and classy and others look cheap and nasty.

I fall into the latter category so don't wear black trousers, ever. I do have blue ones though which are fine!

JaceLancs · 06/09/2024 11:08

I occasionally wear black trousers or black jeans - in winter with cream, pale grey or charcoal cashmere sweaters or if very cold a traditional Aran knit in oatmeal
In spring or autumn I wear with blouses which have a pattern including black or charcoal
I am mainly a dress person though so probably not the best person to ask!

CeliaCanth · 06/09/2024 11:14

Sadly I think T&S were right on this one. Patterned tops featuring black as one of the colours seem to look fine though.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/09/2024 11:29

Well as my wardrobe is virtually all black I don't have this issue, I do have the odd bright top and plenty of grey and a bit of animal print type stuff too

mewkins · 06/09/2024 12:33

I disagree. I think black can look great and loads of neutrals look good with it and more muted colours. It depends on the fabric and the type of black as well. I think everyone is thinking about those black polyester boot cut trousers that everyone wore in the 90s (and I had to wear as work uniform!) But black chinos look good as they're a more washed black. It's trial and error.

DancingNotDrowning · 06/09/2024 12:39

black with neutrals only in my book: creams, taupe, grey (although I never wear grey near my face) khaki and maybe camel.

i loath black with brights or pastels. Looks cheap, but i do love a black and white monochrome look

Arraminta · 06/09/2024 13:41

I think when they decreed 'no colour with black' they meant no primary colours really. Looks too much like cheap office wear.

But neutrals, grey, khaki, taupe etc look fine with black.

I agree with this. Although I will add that I think a much darker jewel colour can work. So I’d never wear emerald green top with black trousers but I might wear a dark
pine green instead. For me, it’s the bright colours that cheapen the look and make it look off. Similarly I think dark burgundy can look nice with black.
I do often look for a better neutral to wear with colour.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/09/2024 15:02

I wear grey tops a lot with black trousers - a silvery grey suits me best but I also wear charcoal or grey/black patterns eg an animal print.

Taupe/camel/beige/stone would also look good depending on your colouring .

Apparently 'burgundy' is going to be 'in' this autumn - that would look fine too .

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 06/09/2024 15:14

According to House of Colour analysis, any colour can look wrong/cheap on you if it's not in your seasonal palette, and black is only in the winter palette. I can't do primaries or pastels, but some black makes me look defined, and, dare I say, sophisticated!
I wouldn't wear black on black though. Too depressing. And mainly worn by twentysomethings round here.

greengreyblue · 06/09/2024 16:13

I love all black.

ObliviousCoalmine · 06/09/2024 16:33

Trinny & Susannah weren't right about anything, ever.

cathyandclaire · 06/09/2024 16:38

I think different textures of black work together because it matters less if they match. So a silk satin shirt and wool/ leather/ suede or something like that. I like all black though.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 06/09/2024 18:33

Trinny often wears a white t-shirt with black trousers and a leopard print coat/jacket. As for me, I don't really wear black, but when I do, it's with navy, grey or ecru.

I was going to say this. One day this week, I wore cropped wide leg wool trousers (black) with a silk shirt (black) and flats (black). Lots of people said how chic I looked!

Summertimer · 06/09/2024 18:43

I wear emerald green, mustard yellow, brown, tan, russet, camel, red, bright blue, purple

FKAT · 06/09/2024 18:52

I agree with a PP, black is for drama and mood, not an everyday colour so I wouldn't worry about making it versatile. Find one top that works with the trousers and wear that when you're feeling it.

I wear black trousers, black polo and black boots when I'm feeling a bit Diana Rigg / Emma Peel. Technically I don't suit it cos I'm a spring but it works somehow.

AzureSheep · 06/09/2024 19:09

The Trinny & Susannah era was at least 20 years ago, styles have changed since then. Trinny is really active on FB / Insta and if you watch any of her videos you’ll see how much she herself has changed her style.

I wear black wide leg trousers (M&S, jersey sort of material but thick so they hang nicely) for work, I wear black tops with them, also jewel colours with a black cardigan, leopard print, and bright patterned tops. Pale, muted neutrals or pastels look DREADFUL on me. I don’t wear black trousers casually though.

Shoes are inportant - with a wide leg, you could go for that sort of sporty office casual style and wear trainers, maybe a black and white striped top with a bold necklace. If you need heels, a chunky black wedge style shoe, plain crew neck T-shirt and either a jacket, kimono, or cardigan?

Scintillae · 06/09/2024 19:19

Charcoal grey!

suburburban · 06/09/2024 19:29

@ImNotThereAmI

Yes I wear that colour with black. I still have the T&S rule in my head.
