Inspiration needed for a registry office wedding in December please – what would you wear?

I’m getting married at the Town Hall on a Monday morning in December! It will just be the two of us, with our adult DC as witnesses. We did plan on getting married this summer, but with one thing and another, we didn’t get around to it, so now I don’t feel the dress I bought is suitable. I will link it anyway, just in case anyone thinks it will be fine!

We will be going out for a meal after, but not celebrating with family and friends until we can arrange something. We are not telling anyone until afterwards and with most people having plans during December, we can’t just drop it on everyone.

I really could do with some inspiration, I think I’m having difficulty, as it’s on a Monday morning. I want to feel special, but feel daft getting dressed up on a Monday for some reason.

I’m looking for a dress which I can wear again, so nothing remotely bridal. I’m size 12, 5’4 and I’d prefer something below the knee or midi, as I don’t like my legs. I also have wide feet, so finding non-frumpy comfortable footwear is difficult. I suit burgundy, teal, plum and purple, but a lot of the dresses I’ve seen look more suitable for a bridesmaid.

I have a budget of around £500, for dress and shoes.

Thanks!

(Although out of stock?)

I did this in winter and wore a green velvet fitted bardot style dress it was lovely. Autumnal colours always look really nice in my opinion. I got it from selfridges

Your dress with one of these when you’re outside would be perfect! Have a wonderful day.

I only have black jackets. I did have a cream one which would have gone, but I sent it to the charity shop at the beginning of the year, as I hardly wore it! Thanks for the suggestion.

I love the shoes, but I need ones with a strap after an ankle injury...they look to have quite a lot of choice at Sargasso & Grey though.

I already have the dress, I got it months ago when it was full price unfortunately.

I love burgundy, it's my favourite winter colour! Thanks for all the suggestions.

these velvet dresses are STUNNING. I had the blue one, it was a lot more vibrant than the photos show. Theres multiple colours that would be lovely for a winter wedding and 20% off this weekend ☺️ they’re boned so really make you look good too!

This is stunning thanks, however, I can't think of an occasion when I would wear it again.

Rixo dress

I'll just pretend I didn't see it was reduced to £95 😢

That’s lovely- shame it’s not available.

Duckies · 07/09/2024 17:03

It's super lovely. Spend your money on a nice coat and shoes. It will be warm enough indoors!

I love this - I think it would be perfect with a little ivory colour fur cape

Look on vinted for an outfit. You'll get a bargain, save the pennies for an outfit when everyone will be there. A trouser suit would be brilliant.

Papyrophile · 07/09/2024 20:42

For a winter wedding, I really like the velvet Rixo Raquel dress. It's so pretty and would look lovely with a nice pair of black or burgundy shoes/boots. Please don't wear opaque tights though.

Sadly Nancy Mac has gone bust or I'd be directing you there tout suite. There's still some floating about but I didn't spot anything in a size 12 although would you consider renting? Eg: https://byrotation.com/products/nancy-mac-green-coats-clo3c9qpw000i000sy75agv9r?srsltid=AfmBOopR_cL01X5YM4hBl3mWDwVmvcoB9NrL63UphEFH9xk3ijOOF3W8.

In the meantime, House of Foxy has some possibilities:

There's this in midnight blue from Monsoon: https://www.monsoon.co.uk/belle-bow-sleeve-velvet-midi-dress-1000339760.html?utm_content=nonbrand&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADjtA_EYVexYvstZStRFAu5mlrxIt&gclid=CjwKCAjwreW2BhBhEiwAavLwfKcHnyBfvKvhNV4Hwgf7lit6jyhn0LX2nDaOdt2J9XOH9N3OGzLerBoC03gQAvD_BwE

Knee-length, not midi but the caped sleeves are wedding-ready: https://clubllondon.com/products/flawless-navy-velvet-square-neck-midi-dress-with-cape-sleeves-cl128999015.

Alternatively I would pop a short-sleeved silk slip under your current dress and wear a velvet frock coat. Put some crystals in your hair.

Congratulations!

That black and white House of Foxy dress is just stunning.

Pliudev · 08/09/2024 11:12

I wouldn’t wear a coat over your original dress, I'd save it for your party. There's a lovely plum coloured Verity flock velvet midi dress by Scarlett &Jo on the John Lewis page someone has linked to. Sorry I can't do that, hopelessly low tech. But it's well within budget and perfect for a December wedding.

PorridgeIsNotSlimmingTheWayIMakeIt · 08/09/2024 14:04

How about this? It's only £28, mind!

Inspiration needed for a registry office wedding in December please – what would you wear?
Sidebeforeself · 08/09/2024 14:18

It’s your wedding day…no matter how small or informal the day you should feel fabulous . Do you feel fabulous in the dress you chose originally? Excited to put it on etc? If so then go with that ( although please God no cardigans or Mary Jane shoes). Work out what your movements are likely to be on the day i.e. how much time outside, do you want to use an umbrella if its raining or will you have a hat etc?

If not - find something else. Great excuse and you’ve got a decent budget.

But please..no cardigans!

This velvet dress is gorgeous and you could wear it again at the bigger family party?
