Thinking of reverting back to box dyes

I have mousey brown hair and have been having blonde highlights put in by hairdresser for 10+ years. She has recently put her prices up and now my daughter is 13 and getting charged adult price for cut it's getting a bit too expensive.

In my early 20's I used box dyes to dye all my hair blonde. Always thought it looked OK. It always irritated my scalp though and I could not wait to wash it off. Has anyone else reverted to box dyes and regretted it or are they really good? I'm scared of my hair going straw like.

Give it a go. They've been reformulated and stuff since then so should be better

No salon has ever done such a great job on my colour that I’ve sworn never to go back to box dye.

Now I do it because of financial/time pressures but it comes out fine. I always use Garnier Nutrisse and bought a little mixing pot and brushes to put it on from Amazon, then wear a shower cap while it sets.

Always do a patch test beforehand with a box dye.

If you are wanting to keep it blonde, you'll need to get a permanent colour with bleach in it.
If you are wanting to add richness or slightly darker that currently, then a semi might be an option. No harsh re growth line, and if you don't like it, it will eventually wash out.
Are you wanting to cover grey?
I assume I'm at least 50% grey and still use casting colours semi. I'm naturally dark brown, but always use a lighter colour, because they come out darker. I therefore use a light brown.

I went the box dye route during lockdown as I gradually became more gollum-like without the salon. I've tried quite a few now and not sure I could go back to paying £££ for a professional job! Tbh I think highlights/balayage etc is best done in the saIon but general colour is fine at home. I dye my naturally mousy reddish hair brunette with a cool tint. I liked the garnier 'good' one in the tub but it faded quite quickly. My absolute favourite so far has been the Josh Wood miracle one. One of my issues with boxes is that you don't always get much variation in tone but with this one you do. I also get the gloss as I can refresh the colour every fortnight between dyes. It also leaves my hair in excellent condition.
