Cheapest & least risky way to get roots done?

Does anyone highlight their own hair? Do you need PhD in Hairdressing for it to not turn out disastrously? (I can barely blow dry my hair let alone do anything complicated)

My roots are revolting and I simply cannot afford to get them done at the hairdressers.

Help!

Do you have somewhere near you where hairdressers train?

I have my hair done at an academy (?) and it's only £10.

Everytime I've tried to home highlight it's been followed by an embarassing trip to the hairdresser's wearing a hat!

Home kits are crap and expensive, best to just go to hairdresser's in my experience!

just get half a head done, mine is around £40 which is quite reasonable i always think.

don't do them yourself, it takes alot of experiementation to get it right.

Similar to the academy idea, look up your nearest college - I work at one and can get my highlights done for £9 - you just need a spare 3 hours or so...

my utterly ham fisted hubby did mine. He painted (with a small brush - the Loreal one) the highlights in blonde.

It was ok but I think i could tell the difference between that and the hairdressers but it wasn't actually shit
