Lost weight- what do I wear?

So this year I’ve finally done it and started to lose weight. So far I’m 5 stone down and I’ve gone from a size 22+ to a comfy 16-18. The problem is, I don’t know how to dress now? I’ve always been overweight/obese, I live in black baggy work trousers, or jeans with oversized dress/tops. I’m still wearing them and I just look ridiculous. I don’t have a sense of style though. I’ve always just bought any clothes that would come in my size.

I have a reasonable chest (clavicles for the first time in years!!!), but an apron belly, big arse but skinnier legs. I can’t wear anything high necked because I still have big boobs. I work from home and it’s very casual so I just need comfy/casual stuff really, but I want to show I’ve lost weight?

any suggestions at all would be appreciated! Most importantly, I’m determined to stick to the diet so planning to lose more weight. I don’t want to spend a fortune on stuff that won’t fit by Christmas, happy to buy cheaper clothes that will do me for now until I work out my sense of style.

Well done, I'd get onto vinted to save some cash.

What colours suit you? What about a square neck dress too for off your clavicles?

@Gruelle thank you! I searched the topic and didn’t see this 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m in my 30s so a bit of a different style aim but I’ll have a good look through the advice, thanks!

I wouldn't spend a fortune as you are presumably still losing. You don't need to go crazy. Look at pictures of what's in style and see what you like. Without knowing what you like, it's hard to suggest.

Google images 'mid size fashion' see if any looks appeal on body types and sizes similar to you

Mid size is UK14-18

Ah, ok - you’re definitely not the same poster, then!

If you’re certain you’ll be losing more weight it obviously isn’t worth spending much now - the difficulty is that very cheap clothes for a size 16-18 are not always terribly nice … Right now I’d probably be sticking to Primark (and maybe Zara if you look for oversized things).

In the meantime - exercise your observational skills!

Spend some time in art galleries looking at portraits across the last several hundred years Half of MN seems to believe only size 8, 22 year old supermodels should be allowed to wear lovely clothes - portraits will disabuse you of this assumption. Every single person portrayed, no matter their age, size or status will be dressed to define their individual selves. It’s incredibly important to remember this. We all only get one life - don’t spend it trying to look like someone else.

Get the Vogue Runway app so you can be as well informed as anyone on the moods, trends, shapes, colours, proportions that will influence and trickle down to mainstream shops. And then seek out things that make you really happy, rather than that just cover the body.

Think about how you want to spend your clothing budget;

If your face shape has altered you may want a new haircut - which will prompt reconsideration of colours and necklines in new clothes.

The scale of accessories you wear will probably change as your size changes. Think about jewellery, belts, footwear you might have hesitated to wear before.

Even working from home a really good winter coat and boots will make going out a pleasure.

Well done on your weight loss. Charity shops and Vinted are your friends. If it makes you feel comfortable just get updated versions of what you are wearing now and when you have reached your goal weight (if you have one) treat yourself to a free John Lewis personal styling appointment.
