Ridged flakey nails - how to sort them out?

Excuse the state of my nails but clearly I don't know how to look after them 🤦🏼‍♀️

They have vertical ridges, they either flake and/or just snap off when they get to a certain length and I've got awful hangnails.

Do I just need to take a decent multivitamin and slap on the hand cream or should I be doing something else and seeing a Dr to test for deficiencies?

Following as I have exactly the same problem!

Following also as I have same problem too with the ridges! Can't seem to find much information about what causes them or how to get rid of them.

I use a cheap 4-way buffer from Amazon and The Manicurist Hiule Vert cuticle oil. They’ve really helped my nails.

This stuff is great: https://www.boots.com/dior-vernis-cr%C3%A8me-abricot-strengthening-nail-care-10g-10333687?

But really, anything moisturising will do some good. I also have a Rimmel nail oil which is pretty decent. Hand cream every time you wash your hands as well.

And a daily multivitamin will definitely help.

Google is the worst isn't it? It's told me that nail ridges are everything from totally harmless to a vitamin deficiency to a sign of chronic disease!

Those are signs of vitamin/mineral deficiencies

liverpoolgal82 · 02/09/2024 18:45

Mine were the same. When I had my bloods done I had under active thyroid (hashimotos), once I was on Levothyroxine the ridges and flakiness went. I was also loosing more hair, extremely tired, weight gain and stiff knee joints when I woke in the morning.

Did you just go to the GP and ask for blood tests or were there other reasons?

I am tired a lot of the time and do have sore joints but I'd put it down to being a busy single parent and hyper mobility.

Deficiencies in iron, Biotin, zinc and vit d will cause peeling nails.

Thyroid is worth a check.

Ridges in nails can also be down to deficiencies in folic acid & protein.

Gettingannoyednow · 02/09/2024 22:05

I sorted mine out with levothyroxine, biotin, nail oil and wearing rubber gloves for all cleaning tasks.

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 02/09/2024 22:07

I have them and eat a good varied diet. I do have low iron though despite eating plenty of red heat and spinach.
Do I'd say sort iron especially if you get tired a easily.

Hrtbrkn · 02/09/2024 22:08

I have hashimotos and my nails are like this.

ACreamyTeaPlease · 02/09/2024 22:21

Another with Hashimotos whose nails are like this, although the flakines has improved (still have the ridges) since my Thyroxine dosage was upped.
