Someone please explain heatless curls?

I have wavy hair, but it's quite flat. So I've been trying the thing where you wrap your hair around a satin sausage looking thing/belt from a dressing gown/silk scarf (as in have tried all of these variations). I just end up with straightish frizz. Am I missing something?

Have tried it with straight from the shower hair, slightly microfibre towel dried hair, left for an hour or so to air dry hair, rough blow dried hair....It just looks awful. I get more waves without this hack than with it. 😂

Going to a wedding in two weeks and hoping for something of a Blake Lively side sweep. Thought it looked like a low effort do...how wrong I was!

Any suggestions?

Have you tried those foam bendy things? Can't remember the correct name for them!

Your hair needs to be 3/4 dry, use a curling product through your hair and then wrap a section from either side of sausage thing tightly the move onto the next section, make sure you attach the scrunchies that come with your sausage tightly on the ends. Let your hair dry naturally then remove by unwrapping each section one at a time, when both sides have been done, use a little curly hair product, serum or oil and gently run your fingers through your hair to separate the curls and turn them into waves. Finish off with some hair spray to keep them in place.

DO NOT BRUSH YOUR HAIR.

Oh I had a set of these as a teenager and remember they were so painful!!! I think they were kinda rubbery on the outside though. Maybe they got better.

Maybe I'm not wrapping tightly enough. Hmm. Okay, will try again tomorrow.

Glad I started practicing early!!

I do heatless curls overnight, on completely dry hair. Dry shampoo on the roots and oil through the ends. A satin sausage with no bendy wire inside for soft waves, and a fabric covered bendy wire for more defined curls.

I prefer the comfort and process of the one with the wire because once the hair is wrapped and secured you can twist the whole length to tighten it against your head and bend the end up on itself to make sure it stays tight while you sleep, and tuck the end of the length up away from your neck. The downside is that the curls can be very ringlet-ty the next day and take longer to drop out into soft curls. Maybe you need to try one with a wire inside if you don’t think you are getting the hair in tightly enough? I got mine from Amazon, unbranded.

The satin sausage one results in immediate soft curls/waves but it’s very hard to get the hair kept in tight because there is no wire to twist it towards your head and keep it in place. This sometimes means the back is less wavy and it’s less comfortable to sleep in because you can’t put the excess sausage anywhere. This one was from Boots, own brand.

I run some oil through the ends with my fingers in the morning to define the curls and never use a brush. I can do this for days in between washes and it looks really good and the curls last.

Weirdly, curls created with heat drop out very quickly and my hair is straight within the hour, even with product.

Still looking for a holy grail hybrid between the two which has a wire but results in soft waves…

ETA: I’d never be able to get the Blake result with the satin sausage. Would def need the wire for those types of curls, and a couple of hours post-curling to allow them to drop to that shape.

Hey, these are the ones I bought maybe 18 months ago - but I see in the description they have been updated to now only have wire on the ends. Mine has wire all the way through the length. Don’t know if that would make a difference!

Peachy Heatless Curler

You need products to control frizz and brush it really straight before you roll make sure there are no kinks and sleep with silk bonnet , if you sleep with them
In without a bonnet you will get frizz

Fedupoftheshits · 31/08/2024 20:11

I use the Kitsch heartless curler linked below using pretty much the same method as @RedFolder said in their post, always on dry hair, never wet.

I've been really impressed, I bought it in May thinking it would be crap but I've pretty much used it every night for my hair and always get compliments on my curls. I'm going to get a bonnet to pop over them as sometimes there is a bit of frizz at the back from where my head rubs on my pillow.

I also recommend looking at tutorials on YouTube and with practice you'll soon get the knack.
