Foot problems

Last summer I stupidly let my feet get sweaty in a pair of (good quality) walking shoes in France. As a result I had the most appalling case of athlete's foot which involved splits in the skin and was quite disabling. I tried all sorts of creams from the GP, none of which worked. Wasn't keen on the pills you can take as they are known to cause liver damage . The "foot lady" we have recommended a couple of things and they are much better now but I'm desperate to avoid a repeat. I have two pairs of Skechers which are made of synthetic material and my feet are wide (size 42). I walk a lot as it's my main form of exercise. Please provide recommendations for walking shoes which keep feet healthy.

Synthetic material in shoes is definitely not good for avoiding fungal problems for they don't let the feet breathe, no matter what their claims are.

Make sure you wear the correct fit of shoe, because if you're squeezing feet into too tight a space the gap between the toes will become warm and sweaty - perfect for fungal infections. Toes need room to wiggle.

Cotton socks and natural material made shoes are the way to go.

If you can wear 2-3 pairs of shoes in rotation, allowing the shoes to dry out inbetween wears really helps knock that fungal stuff on the head too.

Plus, after bathing dry feet with a cool hairdryer, and leave feet exposed around the house if you can. Also, try some foot powder sprinkled in the socks.

First reply has totally nailed it!

I was simply going to repeat:

  • Cotton socks
  • Natural material made shoes.
  • Never wear the same pair 2 days running - allow the shoes to dry out in between wears

Forgot to say re shoes - I wear Hotter shoes and have done for around 30 years and I'm in my 60's now (and I walk a lot too) . They may not be the top of the pops for fashion, but they're so comfy, have a range of widths and styles and have most certainly looked after my feet really well.

Go barefoot as much as possible around the house as well. Ventilation and light are some of the best weapons against fungus.

All the above great advice.
Change your bed sheets once a week.
Use Lamisil spray each day and try Lamisil Once all over your feet (need to plan so you don’t get them wet for 48 hours afterwards)
Cut down on sugar.
Take it seriously as the fungus can spread to your nails and then it’s really hard (and expensive!) to treat.
