I mean I know everything has gone up in price but the quality isn't reflected.
New look £36.99 for a jumper that will bobble after one wash.
I seen a lovely fleece and they wanted £59.99
Primark £23 for a cardigan
Nearly £24 for a pj set (top and bottoms sold separately)
Anyone else turning to vinted ?

I cannot justify spending that kind of money,

I just think of the stuff I'd get on Vinted for the same price.

GreenPoppy · 28/08/2024 12:34

I'm trying Vinted, but if it's not a brand I have tried before it's really hit and miss getting something that fits. Or they look a bit more worse for wear than it looked like in the pictures.

I've got a few more items on the way this week, then I'll weigh up whether I'm actually saving much money by buying on there.

Gettingannoyednow · 28/08/2024 12:38

It's quite a few years now since I bought something full price from a shop (underwear excepted).

If you're careful on Vinted (sharp closeup photos especially of the labels, good seller feedback, reliable brands) you can save a lot of money.

I'm somewhat of the view that like food we've perhaps gotten too used to things being "cheap" and the impact that is having on the environment and the "smaller"
people in the supply chain. Things probably need to be more expensive, but sadly not for the right reasons, those making the clothes aren't going to be the ones getting the pay rises. Another vote for Vinted.

Absolutely! It’s crazy how prices have shot up, yet the quality often doesn’t match. I totally agree about New Look—paying so much for a jumper that doesn’t hold up is frustrating

As a ebayer and charity shopper I'm always taken aback at the price of brand new clothes. Sometimes I treat myself to a few new items but it feels a rather extravagant affair.

SomeoneelsessFault · 28/08/2024 12:46

I hate it. I haven't been able to afford supermarket clothes for a few years, due to gentle but steady price increases; I'm going to really struggle to look smart enough for work, now that Primark are noticeably increasing prices too. I gave up on the rest of the high street a while ago, due to cost.

I work in EYFS so my clothes get trashed frequently by the wee ones. I also have an unhelpful body shape that defies online shopping (I can vary by up to 5 sizes within a brand...). This year, I am going to have to follow what I tell parents: badly ripped but mended, and stained but clean are completely fine and hope my manager agrees this extends to staff too! Then I can keep my reasonably intact clothes for out of work.

Muffintop20 · 28/08/2024 12:57

Generally I don’t think the quality matches the price for a lot of high street stores.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 28/08/2024 13:08

It'll all come crashing down down again when people stop buying. They are just riding the back of the recent inflation but sooner or later it'll be a race to the bottom again.

henlake7 · 28/08/2024 13:34

TBH I dont think Primark is that bad. The quality these days is pretty decent, esp their Edit range. Also Pepco (Poundland) are surprisingly good.
But that does make it obvious how much you are overpaying in a shop like New Look as the quality is very much on par! I usually only buy their stuff on sale or Vinted.

But def Vinted is the way to go. Ive gotten some fantastic stuff from brands I couldnt otherwise afford. Just got a cardigan today that would of been £65 new and I got it (still looking brand new) for £3.50 from Vinted!

Also sale prices bother me....Ive also picked up some stuff at crazy sale reductions but they happen so frequently it always makes me think 'this is what I should actually be paying for this item!' as sale prices seem to reflect product worth better to me.

Lampzade · 28/08/2024 13:38

I have started to buy my clothes from Amazon.

DebtFreeHopeful · 28/08/2024 13:49

New Look is really expensive now. I just can't justify prices for low quality. I had my colours done professionally which helped as I'm only looking for certain colours so I don't mind as much (and subsequently buy less) but also I now shop on Vinted.

For example I could spend 15-20 on sport leggings in Tesco or get a good as new pair of Alphaletes in one of my colours like navy, teal, red, from Vinted for 8-15, they would be 85 new.

I think the market will change enormously toward second hand - IKEA are now launching a second hand market place.

So for now Vinted is an absolute gold mine.

ABirdsEyeView · 28/08/2024 15:17

Vinted isn't sustainable long term though - eventually the good stuff will be bought/worn out and only the acrylic tat will be available. Or you need something specific and can't find it on Vinted when you want it!

Prices are mad though - took dd on her post exam results/pre college shopping trip and bog standard hoodies and jumpers were £35 each, just buying stationary was £50.

Freddochips · 28/08/2024 16:26

So £37 today is about £20 in the early 00s but obviously wages haven’t grown for most in the same way. I think we got very used to cheaper clothes and food as pp said & those days are gone unfortunately. The countries that manufacture those clothes have seen their economies grow so the cost prices aren’t as cheap & then shareholders expect yr on yr growth.
