Anti-aging/skin appearance question: anyone noticed a difference to their skin on their face after using sunscreen daily?

GoldOnyx · 26/08/2024 00:20

I don’t put sunscreen on my face daily, but know I should. I’m curious though - if anyone on here does use sunscreen daily, have you noticed a positive difference to your skin since you started using it?

Also, more broadly, does anyone have any tips on how to reduce visible signs of skin aging (if possible)? E.g. is sun protection the most important thing? Of course, there’s also things to think about like avoiding smoking, not drinking too much and trying to get enough sleep. But is sun protection (and maybe not smoking, too) the key thing?

Thanks.

It's not going to reverse sun damage, more prevent damage moving forwards as you age.
There are some treatments which are starting to show proven results such as LED . Spend a lot of time googling!

I meant I spend a lot of time googling!!!

The point about the sunscreen is to prevent damage, not to repair damage that's already done.

Having said that, some sunscreens for the face are really good moisturisers and I would say I've seen a difference with using them! The Ambre Solaire Super UV Anti-age Face Protection Cream is pretty good, imo, though I've currently got the 'serum' liquid product and don't rate it. Just seen the cream's on offer everywhere, so I should stock up 😎

I have ghastly wrinkles from smoking. Don't need to tell anyone not to do it, though, do I.

Tretinoin plus sunscreen the only proven cure for aging. Numerous threads on it if you search.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 26/08/2024 07:08

You won’t see short term results from it.

TheOGCCL · 26/08/2024 10:17

It’s hard to measure because if you apply sunscreen daily, as I’ve been doing for years, you can’t also see what your skin would have been like not doing that. It’s not like a serum or moisturiser where you often feel a difference quickly.

Sun is a massive factor in skin damage.

Closest I’ve got as a comparison is my hands which I don’t apply SPF on and they look ten years older than my face.

I have seen a difference since adding Hello Sunday primer to my routine. It really is sweat proof and stops me sweating/wiping everything off. It’s a good primer too. Texture is both balmy and grainy but I love it. I use LRP underneath. Highly recommend. I’m 48 btw so I’m in damage control mode.

GoldOnyx · 26/08/2024 10:59

Thanks all.

I’m a bit wary of adding tretinoin to my routine as I’ve got such sensitive skin, but I’ll definitely put sunscreen on every day now - you’ve convinced me!

Sorry my original post wasn’t worded very well. I realise I can’t reverse any existing sun damage through wearing sunscreen (I don’t think I have any significant sun damage) but that it will just help protect my skin for the future.

I think its def worth it. I often forget which is really bad and Im sure I'll regret!

My mother is 77 though and barely has any wrinkles at all (she is very careful about the sun as she has vitiligo and it makes her 'look like a friesan cow' when she gets a tan!!LOL)

UmberMoose · 26/08/2024 14:09

Try to use a spf 50+ which is really good like from la roche posay. It won't let your skin damage further easily. So here is my routine that I follow with that:
Morning:
Using micellar water to clean my face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
La roche posay spf
Evening:
Cerave hydrating moisturizer with ceramides,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

I use sunscreen daily but I do wonder if it's pointless. Obviously I know uv damage is real. But my dh is fanatical about using sunscreen and staying out of the sun yet looks years older than he is. He is 50 but he could be mistaken for 60 he is so wrinkled. It's been a complete waste of time.

I wear it religiously , have done for years and use tret and have got an led mask. I am wrinkly (52) and saggy. It's mostly genetic, god only knows what I would look like if I wasn't doing those things. I swear I see new wrinkles about every fortnight.

DebtFreeHopeful · 26/08/2024 14:41

I notice a difference in about a week but I take an immune suppressant that lowers my UV resistance.

DebtFreeHopeful · 26/08/2024 14:41

Has to be factor 50.

StormingNorman · 26/08/2024 14:47

Aging affects your whole body, it’s just reflected in the skin. To really address it you need to:

Hydrate - drink 2L daily

Wear sunscreen

Sleep well

Eat nutritious food

Manage stress

Exercise

Skincare is just the cherry on the cake.

Jewel1968 · 26/08/2024 14:54

The problem with sunscreen is you can miss bits or not take it far enough to the ears etc.... I wear sunscreen but I also wear hats. I think hats are really good and are also very stylish. I wear hats summer and winter and always with a brim.

My mother never wore sunscreen and had very few wrinkles in her 80s and she had an outdoor Life. She also had a pre cancerous mole removed from her face (would have developed into cancer) so I think that is evidence of sun exposure and yet very few wrinkles.

I like ulteasun sunscreen.

Fairyliz · 26/08/2024 15:15

I think sun cream can help a little but I think it’s mainly genetics and weight.
My little fat dad with Italian heritage had very few wrinkles in his 70’s despite liking the sun and never wearing sunscreen. I think the fat filled out any wrinkles.
My mum was very slim and pale and had lots of wrinkles in her 50’s despite avoiding the sun.

Actually if you apply enough factor 30 is suitable but most people don't do it's suggested that badly applied factor 50 gives you factor 30 protection.

It also doesn't have to be expensive I'm currently using E45 facial sunscreen and it's great for my dry skin and it was around a fiver. I think you're less likely to use enough if it cost a fortune

The Boots Future Renew serum has actually worked wonders on my face, and I saw a difference quite quickly too. Smoothed out wrinkles, reduced age spots and evened out skin tone. I am on my third tube at the moment, and I never commit to any beauty product normally.

bryceQ · 27/08/2024 20:42

UVA breakdown collagen over time so you won't see immediate results but long term it's best practice for protecting your skin.

Tretinoin is clinically proven to get anti aging results by improving the cell turnover in the skin. But it's pointless if you don't wear Spf as you're just damaging the skin over and over.

PearlsAreGirlsBestFriend · 28/08/2024 07:21

I have noticed that LRP sunscreen has helped to maintain the effect of dark spot lightening after 2 months of tret last year. I opted for Garnier SPF 50 due to cost last in last purchase and massively disappointed, it stings, causes redness at the end of the day, cheeks on fire, and brown spots are not as faded. Back to LRP on the face, will use up Garnier on the neck

Haha, there are many products having spf 50+ and its always good to use from reputed brands so its effective for the skin.
