Floisme, that is another thing - charity shops and the re-selling of fast fashion. It just doesn't last. I work with some of the clothes bank outlets and visited one of the big plants in Bilston. It was a real eye-opener.

The good quality clothing that can be re-used is really on the decline. Fast fashion is trending and when it's reached the end of its life (after a few wears) it's fit for the bin. Even its use in textiles (sound muffling, as an example) is so limited because of its material composition.

The good quality clothing that can be re-used is really on the decline.

Yes, I've bought second hand for most of my adult life and the quality's tanking. Fast forward another ten years and I can't see there being much decent stuff left.

By way of illustration (I've probably told this story before so apologies if you've seen it), I was in a large vintage store a couple of years ago, the kind that display 'Fuck fast fashion' posters all over the shop. I stopped by a rail marked '80's jackets' and as soon as you picked them up, you could tell by the weight that they were modern replicas, probably made in China.

Where is fairly acceptable these days, does anyone know?

Read here, @SensibleSigma:

And there are always lists available online of (at least British) manufacturers who try to do as little harm as possible.

Not to everyone's taste but Palava

Palava Clothing UK | Official Website & Online Shop

Colourful vintage-style clothing for women, children and home. Ethically made in the UK using organic cotton, tencel & linen - with plastic free packaging.

The truly ethical brands aren’t what everyone wants all the time.

I’m afraid this is true. So much moaning and dismissiveness about high prices and dullness whenever anyone suggests brands like this on S&B:

Community Clothing

I think Community Clothing have the dullest clothes I have ever seen (and I prefer plain clothes), but that doesn't mean I buy from Shein, Temu et al. It is possible to find nice clothes without resorting to them. None of us can truly know just how ethical the companies we do buy from are - but I am not buying clothing I dislike just because the brand is ethical.

I was looking for storage boxes the other day, they've been advertised on the TV, UK company - you get 6 for £50 - they have a useful panel and zip up flap. I'd forgotten the name of the company so typed that information in and Temu came up - first search - selling double or triple of these things for the same price. Not the same quality or spec but close enough.

I thought about it. Then I waited till the advert came on again and bought from the UK company. I thoroughly dislike the concept of Temu. I understand that people need to/want to and that's their choice. I would prefer to support a UK company so that's what I did.

The 'haul' things on social media make me so angry, it's just consumer greed but somebody is paying for this, even if the consumer is paying pennies for their rubbish to be imported here.

Dandelionsarefree · 25/08/2024 17:41

There is a carbon tax coming up that I am keeping my fingers crossed will hopefully end up with this shit concept of buying shit from far away for next to nothing- Just because people are bored, have smartphones, need constant excitement and can't care less about the environment and human beings.
I hope it will be implemented in a way that will make products too expensive/ undesirable for people with no conscience. That's my only hope.

WhenWillWanksWildly · 25/08/2024 18:37

Unfortunately I have a lot more mixed feelings about other stuff, like the storage boxes mentioned above. I often see UK websites and let’s not forget the rubbish on Etsy selling the exact same stuff as Temu et al. I’m not talking about Temu ripping the designs off, I’m talking about drop shipping. Arguably I should buy neither (if it is made by child labour or other unethical practices) but it can be impossible for a regular person to find the best product.

Yet look at the treads on MN where people share Shein discount codes…..As long as they get their next little outfit, who cares?

What a horrible self centred attitude

Restaurantcritic · 25/08/2024 19:42

Mine? Just drawing attention to the fact that a lot of people don’t care where their clothes come from.
