I want plain shoes, maybe lace ups, to see me through the cold weather.

I was thinking Dr Martens but all I hear about is the quality is poor. I have Solovair boots which I love, but their lace up shoes look a bit narrow on the toe box for me.

They don’t have to be lace up, but I want sturdy, plain, hard wearing, that sort of thing. Either black, chocolate brown, maroon etc.

And I have wide-ish feet so that narrows down the options if you’ll forgive the pun.

Low heeled.

Can anyone recommend anything they’ve seen anywhere?

Just a thought, but if you want a good quality pair of shoes or boots. You're (generally);going to get a matching price point. Buy cheap, get cheap, but my points was to perhaps consider something like Klarna/Clearpay/PayPal pay on 3, where you can spread the cost over a few months and get a better quality pair that will last you years, rather than a cheap pair and this time next year. Or maybe even before winter Is out looking for another pair.

That being said, and to totally contradict myself, and don't dismiss this. Is shoe zone, my son who should probably be a product tester as he destroys everything-went through hight school in shoes from shoe zone, and each pair lasted him THE ENTIRE school year. They cost £12...He'd go through a pair of Clarkes at £45 each pair, a term for reference. (My idea was even if these They only last a term. 3 pairs is still less than the clarks) so imagine surprise when they were still going in July!...The brand was hobo and he said they were the most comfortable shoes he's ever owned.

Oh, forgot to mention, has extremely wide feet, we usually have to go a size up just for extra width( hence the clarkes in the first place) but with the shoe zone ones he was able to buy his usual size

I’ve seen Lanx on Instagram, they do look good. I like the women’s Calder, but at £175 they’re a bit beyond me at the moment. Plus I don’t live anywhere near them and I prefer to try on in a shop.

I know it's a bit of a bit of a pain, but you can always get a couple of pairs online to try at home and return the others ...just a thought

I have Skechers work relaxed fit in black leather and they are blissful and have lasted ages. Trainers really though.

Dm's are still a great choice at their price. Personally I think they suffer because of their history. If it's a different shoe from the past, appraised for how it functions today, then I still set it above the other brands always mentiond on these threads. I've tried them all and chosen DM shoes and boots for the comfort and price.

Really? DD had "new" DMs fur school a couple of years ago and they lasted less than 6 months. Literally, smooth sole, stitching undone, leather worn through in the folds.. Even for wearing them 5 days a week, that's not a great life expectancy for the price (at a similar age (12ish) I had DMs that latter be through school and university.

I bought myself some Solovair boots at the same time, which I wear pretty much everyday in the winter and they still look brand new after 2 years

Branleuse · 24/08/2024 13:15

Quality is not poor on dms, if you make sure you get normal leather ones without all the fancy shit

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 24/08/2024 13:34

How about barefoot shoes. They have a wide toe box and are as flat as they come.

I'm 2 months into my Vivobarefoot boots and won't be looking back.

Ihadenough22 · 24/08/2024 13:57

I know a lady with a broad foot. She has found that hotter shoes can be good. I know they have a website and they may have the type of footwear you are looking for.

notacooldad · 24/08/2024 14:29

Dr Marten flats
I've ordered these this morning. I have a few winter dresses that they will look good with for work.
Lanx are still my favourite though 😍

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2024 14:44

My feet are wide-ish and the Solovairs are fine. They are unisex so probably a bit more generous. Try ebay or vinted, or their outlet.
Cordovan Gibson Shoe | Solovair | Handmade in England – NPS Solovair UK (nps-solovair.com)

Their women's shoes are probably a bit narrower. My Toast mary-janes were. Solovair Mary Jane Shoes | Cordovan | TOAST.

You said shoes but ... Demi | Womens Boots in Black Bookbinder Leather | Grenson

Allnewtometoo · 24/08/2024 16:31

Clarks brogues are nice. They look narrow but fit my wider feet ok.

InfradeadToUltraviolent · 24/08/2024 16:37

Moshulu are highly spoken of and worth a try if there's a branch near you.

Those Grenson boots 😍 And on sale! Sadly sold out in my size

Lanx are ace. My boots are about to go in to their fourth winter and two
pairs of loafers in to their third. They’re brill, I wear them all the time and they look like new. They’ve sort of ruined other shoes for me.

Longhotsummers · 24/08/2024 17:05

My Clarks Hamble lace up brogues are still going strong having been reheeled numerous times. They’re very comfortable and I’ve got them in tan and patent black.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2024 17:09

Mine too, fortunately, as I do not need another pair of boots and can't afford them. I couldn't resist posting the link though as they're gorgeous and a bargain.

Thistooshallpass24 · 25/08/2024 00:23

DM's are rubbish now no longer a quality shoe just a fashion brand.

I’m never wearing anything again other than Birkenstock boots. I have a laced pair of Birminghams which I love, haven’t got particular narrow feet but got the narrow size which I still find quite roomy so the standard fit must have a good bit of space. I had the Chelsea boot size before and they were good too but the Birminghams are my perfect boot.

Those boots are like £300
For that I'd expect them to be made of little else but decent materials, they're not though.

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2024 11:58

I love my Arizonas but the Birmingham boots don't do it for me, sorry. For that money, they'd need to be 10/10. We're all different though.

Coughsweet · 25/08/2024 12:12

Birminghams are great for me and I bought them as they can be properly resoled which I intend to. To me they seem far better made than my old
DMs and also the Birkenstock Stalon which I’ve had before (they should be at that price!). They’re the only footwear I’ve ever owned where people have approached me to ask where I got them. I really liked the Solovair 6 eye brogue boot but I couldn’t find my size when I was looking and I’m sorted for boots now.

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2024 12:28

Sounds like a strong recommendation.
I don't like brogues - I think that the way people tend to call any old flat shoes brogues might have put me off them.

I'm not sure how many boots I have Blush but it doesn't stop me wanting new ones.
I get random people complimenting them.

Thistooshallpass24 · 25/08/2024 19:01

I'm confused why people are suggesting boots when @MeAgainAndAgain asked for shoes.
Pavers shoes sometimes have good leather flats ( you do have to wade through some "interesting" shoe choices"

KirstenBlest · 25/08/2024 20:14

@Thistooshallpass24 , probably because the OP mentions boots. Some of us did suggest shoes.

Thesheerrelief · 25/08/2024 21:20

@Thistooshallpass24 it's a slippery footwear slope! You start looking and shoes and before you know it there are shoes AND boots in your basket. Then you think perhaps the OP might like them too. I have no suggestions but am enjoying browsing all the shoes and boots on this thread and will probably make a purchase 😁

Thistooshallpass24 · 26/08/2024 22:03

@MeAgainAndAgain surprisingly shoezone have some imo nice leather shoes ( some of the kids back to school brogues/ lace ups look good!) they also have an amazing returns policy
