What to wear for Michelin dinner semi outdoor setting end of August?

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 23/08/2024 15:10

Help what to wear for an occasion like this end of August? Totally out of my comfort zone with this but want to feel comfortable without feeling over or under dressed.

I am tall, plus sized and menopausal. I was thinking a new cotton maxi dress I have not evening style more day time (with possibly a wrap for shoulders) or beige/cream linen trousers with a One Hundred stars top or similar (possibly a wrap for shoulders). Do either of these sound ok? Or can anyone suggest a top not polyester itchy or warm with sleeves (short or 3/4)? I couldn’t cope with searching for or wearing a jacket.

Also struggling for understated footwear (don’t need heels I only have flat casual comfortable sandals possibly past their best) and what style of bag?

Thanks

What sort of budget were you thinking of?

I should think there’ll be as many different styles of outfit as there are people present on the occasion - so it’s just a matter of wearing what you feel best in. (Very sorry but I find the thought of ‘wraps’ or 100 Stars depressing, so won’t comment further on either.) Hard to advise without knowing your actual size - Zara has a few glorious things if you search Plus Size Woman. They may not actually fit you but the styling is lovely:

Zara co-ord set

These shoes would ground a long dress:

Grenson

While something like these:

Zara

would dress up plain trousers. (Zara online has countless relatively dressy, flat shoes.)

Really, unless you’re debuting a brand new Hermes Kelly bag no one’s going to be judging your bag! Do you actually need one? If so just choose something small and fun. No need to spend a lot. (All photos from Zara as that’s what I was looking at. Obviously adjust for your preferred budget.)

The trousers and top are fine. Just take a pashmina wrap or similar and flat shoes also fine.

Just look semi smart and groomed, maybe some chunky jewellery.

No jeans or trainers. No jacket required.

Enjoy!

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 23/08/2024 17:15

Do you want to dress up/dress differently than usual, or feel like you have to? I’ve been lucky enough to be at several Michelin restaurants in recent years and most people are smart-casual. Your summer dress sounds fine!

PiggieWig · 23/08/2024 17:16

The hundred stars outfit sounds perfect! Enjoy yourself 😊

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 23/08/2024 19:27

Thanks all. One Hundred Stars now do tops like these so not just the open jackets onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/tops

What a very strange post. Nothing at all wrong with the OPs smart suggestions which you criticise then say - look at these lovely Zara things although they may not fit you. Such a mean comment. Zara clothes are not at all well made.

BetsyRegards · 23/08/2024 21:45

I don’t think youv’e understood my post at all,@luckylavender. Why on earth would I want to be ‘mean’?

The OP didn’t specify her size, or a budget. I’m well aware that some shops offer ‘plus size’ clothes that don’t actually meet the needs of anyone over a size 18 - so one can only indicate where they exist and hope they have something worthwhile. I’m not sure there’s any problem with saying some of the things she suggested would not be to my taste? This is an anonymous forum - no one confronts a stranger in person at an event and tells them they don’t like their clothes. In real life I don’t even notice what others are wearing. Here we are free to give an opinion. Presumably the OP would not have started a thread if she didn’t want to hear what other people think?

Without an indication of budget I find it’s largely a waste of time to suggest anything beyond lower High Street prices. But I’m ready and happy to provide links to any relevant designer if that would suit the OP better.

Meanwhile, everyone commenting or lurking on the thread is looking forward to your suggestions.

Could you wear a jacket of some sort over your dress, rather than a wrap? Could take it off indoors but might need it outdoors.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 22:06

I often see wraps and pashminas recommended on here btw, but I never see them irl, even at weddings.

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 23/08/2024 22:11

Thanks all@BetsyRegards no offence taken. I am not keen on the first Zara outfit as to me it looks like too try hard, too now and too much like PJ’s. But we all have different tastes.

I am 6ft and larger than a size 18 so Zara would neither be wide enough or long enough length wise. I would like an outfit trousers and top or dress for £200 maximum. So not really thinking lower high street or top designer. I am also over 50 if that makes a difference.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I am likely to be overheating even outside due to hot flushes most of the time and we now have so few local shops it will be hard enough trying to order an outfit online without adding a jacket to the mix and finding one I like that fits, is suitable and matches two outfits and isn’t overly warm would be a a tall order.

That is a bargain, @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. Lovely for pretty much any occasion when one wants to look nice. (And when did Jaeger stop over-embellishing everything?)

ToBeDetermined · 23/08/2024 22:58

Last Michelin star place I went to had seven stars and I just wore a shirt dress. It was a spur of the moment thing to eat there.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 23:03

I think 3 stars is the maximum.

I’ve only been to a couple of one star places and clothing ranged from jeans and trainers to full on party dresses.

ToBeDetermined · 23/08/2024 23:15

It had seven stars in a row- one star every year for seven years including the year I ate there.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 23:24

So it’s a one star that has retained its star.

That aside, a nice shirt dress sounds a good choice.

Garlicfest · 23/08/2024 23:37

This is pretty, I think, and they've got it in 20 Long. You could even wear it with that lovely pink linen blazer if it's cold outside.

Oh, this is nice! Pure cotton, available in 20 Tall. I'd suggest it's very suitable for your restaurant date.

II think as you're tall, you would look lovely in a Cos dress, sadly not many have sleeves or go above a size 16, but they do come up quite oversized? iIt might give you some inspiration though...

Rina66 · 24/08/2024 09:03

I love the sleeves on the red one

I'd go for something g reasonably plain and neutral. No one will bother really looking at your clothes in detail. So if you have an outfit that you feel super comfy in and it's plain and not too casual then you'll be fine.
On sandals, I can't wear heels so I have a range of different sandals. There's often sales on at John Lewis or Dune (i like their Loupe flats which I got discounted) or just buy a pair of flat ballet pumps Jones used to do decent ones.
