to think MN view of what to wear to a wedding is based on 4 weddings and a funeral?

Young ones now wear all sorts to weddings...I'd got to the age where I'd had a break from weddings and now in my 50s I've started going to them again as the next generation starts the merry go round.

Short dresses, slinky dresses, night gown type dresses....and they all looked young and lovely.

On here anything other than a flowery tent gets the thumbs down...

I've attended lots of weddings and christenings, I've seen men wearing jeans and at one a football shirt, it doesn't make it acceptable!

exprecis · 19/08/2024 22:30

I haven't seen lots of people recommending floral sacks at all.

Anything that will involve tit tape is not wedding attire to me.

2AND2GC · 19/08/2024 22:38

I'm late fifties and going to friends' kids' weddings.

My observations:

Youngsters wear a nice dress and curl their hair. Some wear a hair band.

Ladies of my generation/ MOB/ MOG wear a nice dress - and a hat for the church.

Gold strappy block heel sandals and gold clutch/ bag go with everything.

I've seen some ladies wearing a boxy two-piece (very 'Phase Eight') with a little fascinator and in my opinion this looks frumpy and dated.

NewName24 · 19/08/2024 22:47

No, I don't think that.

You must be reading different threads from me, which is odd, as I like both wedding threads and S&B threads so do read quite a lot.

Lincoln24 · 19/08/2024 22:54

Flowery tents is going a bit far but it is a bit tiresome whenever a response links to a Reiss/Hobbs/Phase Eight dress in response to anything slightly edgy posted by an OP. Those brands feel very dated.

TizerorFizz · 19/08/2024 23:21

Phase 8 is when you think you are trying but you aren’t. Gold shoes and bag? Cruise ship staples and go to accessories but not if you are young. These are for ladies of a certain age. Not sure the truly stylish have this combination.

I disagree. I was at a very lovely wedding about a month ago and many of the lovely young things had gold sandals. Gold is very much in at the moment.

Nope.

And that’s not what they wore in FW&aF either.

I thought all the young ones got the memo from the B&G for the colour coordinated pastel shades needed for Insta 😄

I don’t think what people wear to weddings has changed all THAT much.

A lot of them are still pretty 4 Weddings, and a lot never were..

Tents have been ubiquitous for ages for day wear, but Route 1 wedding fashion stayed a bit more fitted than that.

JamSanger · 20/08/2024 00:48

The new thing on MN wedding threads is to recommend those white Alice band horrors. Might be cute styled on a 21 yr old slip of a thing on an advert. Not cute on any middle aged woman, ever.

Yeah it is strange to me that most of the time, young women seem to wear clothing that looks very shapeless to me - these huge floral tiered dresses etc. But on here at least for weddings anything that would allow you to wear a bra is considered "frumpy"

Strictlyshortly · 20/08/2024 12:55

I don't think any of the suggestions on the wedding wear threads would work for the weddings I go to. I'm like you OP I'm now going to the weddings of friends offspring and younger family members. I love seeing the younger generation in their slinky fitted dresses and fabulous hats/fascinators.

I think the more rural weddings we go to are quite fancy affairs where the women look great in boutique dresses and matching hats. We're not posh btw so not quite 4 Weddings territory. Anything in the MN threads is usually just not dressy enough.

sweetpickle2 · 20/08/2024 13:13

I agree with you OP- I think often the people dishing out their advice on what is and isn't acceptable at a wedding (fashion wise, but also invitation wise, present wise, anything wise really!) haven't been to one in about 20 years.

TizerorFizz · 20/08/2024 13:34

@sweetpickle2 Ive seen pictures and fashion magazines often have ideas for wedding guests. I actually quite like mutex gold sandals but over 50 and it’s cruise wear Or wear gold espadrilles if it’s casual or beach style.

There’s great dresses for weddings of varying types at Rixo, Me&Em, &OtherStories, Zimmermann, Self Portrait, SisterJane, Farm Rio, Mango, Sezanne etc.

What are “Liverpool eyebrows”?
Google had no answers!

Google "scouse brows" 😂

GabrielOakRose · 20/08/2024 14:33

I went to loads about 25 years ago but not been to any since. I've learned from mnet that fascinators are now dated. If I go to one I'll probably research what people are wearing now. I wouldn't wear all white or all black, even if that was now the done thing. So many other colours to choose that aren't bridal or funeral like

Bugger, I love Phase 8, but I'm 55 and not stylish...

I’m over 60, obsessive about clothes and have never worn anything from either Reiss or Phase Eight. Not likely to start now. I think I may have bought one or two things from Hobbs during my student days - but nothing this century.

If I should find myself with a wedding invitation any time soon I’m more likely to wear a velvet or light wool suit than any type of dress.
