Would you return these jeans?

Fell in love with some straight leg jeans from next, had been looking for ages but couldn’t find any that gave the look I wanted.

have worn and washed once snd the hem has started to fray. When I took them out of the machine there were loads of long white strands hanging from the hem. Now they weren’t hemmed, was a straight cut across the bottom, but I feel like they don’t look as good now. I am not sure whether to return as faulty or whether that’s just a hazard of this type of jean.

washing instructions just said wash inside out which I did, and I washed them separately in a small load of denim items.

i very rarely return things I’m more of a “put up and shut up” kind of person but im so disappointed.

Am I unreasonable to return it will this just happen again? Attempting to attach before and after pics if it helps. Would love to get some opinions on this.

It kind of looks like it's meant to be that way. Like a distressed seam? I guess if it seems like it's unravelling/ getting worse that quickly then it's probably a quality issue. So return it. But it looks nice though.

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/08/2024 14:18

That does look like it’s a part of the style? Not sure you can complain about that really. If you feel strongly, return them and see what they say.

StarlightLady · 19/08/2024 14:18

I would return them. Manufacturers overly dependent on people not bothering to return poor goods.

leapinglizard1234 · 19/08/2024 14:29

I work there and they are meant to do this .. it's a rough hem and will fray .

They will prob return them though tbh as we get so many returns we don't overly care why .

Up to you but don't buy again as they will do it again

Izzymoon · 19/08/2024 14:30

They are exactly the jeans you ordered…

TheFlis · 19/08/2024 14:34

I wouldn’t as they’re not faulty. A raw edge like that will always fray, if they didn’t intend it to they would have hemmed it.

Scissorsisters · 19/08/2024 14:40

That is literally what happens to denim when you wash a raw edge. Not faulty and if you get a replacement it will happen again.

StormingNorman · 19/08/2024 14:41

I have a pair with a raw edge and regularly trim long bits off. They do fray when you wash them. TBH it’s put me off buying another pair.

Scissorsisters · 19/08/2024 14:41

PS you can see the same effect on the distressed knee hole.

overgrowntoddler · 19/08/2024 15:22

I wouldn't return them.

And i return everything that's doesn't wash right!

Par for the course with raw edges denim

Debtdolly · 19/08/2024 17:27

Thanks everyone, I did think that it’s probably just what happens with a raw edge. Am a bit concerned they’ll end up considerably shorter if they keep unravelling, but not much I can do about that so will perhaps wash less frequently.

To be honest I don’t know why I’ve bought ripped jeans again because the last pair I had I completely ripped through the knee! Might learn my lesson one day!

They're meant to do that my teenage step daughter loves this look and purposefully rips them more

leapinglizard1234 · 19/08/2024 18:41

You could get them hemmed a tiny bit to stop them fraying more or if you love them then return them and buy the long ones and get them turned up

Scissorsisters · 19/08/2024 18:59

They probably won't fray much more.

Wahine24 · 19/08/2024 21:50

Fray stop is a liquid you apply to raw edge clothes and it stops the fray going further. I'm sure it's still about , I used to work in a haberdashery, tiny bottle lasts forever

Wahine24 · 19/08/2024 21:52

It's still available

You can sew them so they don't fray any further. I ask our local alterations man to do this for me. Or alternatively you can use a fabric glue to stop further fraying.
Look it up online.
