Help me stop following fashion trends and instead be more artsy, bohemian and slightly hippie

I've realised I don't want to follow trends anymore it's tiresome and takes away from me having my own style.

I've definitely not created my own style yet. I want to dress more artsy, bohemian (but not floral), a little hippieish. But I don't know where to shop. I would love like two go to online stores to buy from and just stick to them out of ease.

Can anyone recommend anywhere?

Thank you 🙏 🌈🌊

I dont think you can beat Joe Brown for boho. They are brilliant with sizes and sell very cheap on Vinted as well.
I also like Joanie for more retro, quirky stuff.

Isn’t about buying the odd piece you love, and working other things around it? I always think colours you love work together. You know what shapes suit you.

I like random finds in charity shops that I work other things around. Though it’s inevitably a coat or jacket, which isn’t wildly helpful.

And stopping looking at fashion pages so you aren’t accidentally drawn in!

Free people have nice stuff but can be a bit hit and miss. Some of it is hugely expensive for not very good quality. Have a look on vinted for second hand but read the reviews on free people website first.

I also like Spell, Forgotten Tribes, Monsoon and some Urban outfitters.

I agree with Joe Browns, although some of the fabric can feel quite plasticky, so I’m not sure about the quality. Some things from White stuff might fit the bill, depending on what look you’re aiming for.

Go for Vinted and ebay. Vintage velvet jackets and opera coats. Silk or embroidered blouses and scarves. Vintage maharishi trousers.

I agree recent designs from Joe Brown look nice - they used to be very frilly and fussy but have improved this year.

Some current trends might work - satin bias cut skirt with fluffy cropped jumper and chunky boots. You can buy the skirts on the high street and maybe look for a vintage angora tank top.

On the High Street you could look at Monsoon. At the upper end of High Street prices, try All Saints as they can have some lovely unusual cuts, Anthropologie and Ghost.

I love Joe Browns for design, but everything DH and I have bought has been made from very strange fabrics, the cotton is very stiff ( it is now been made into laundry bags, just unwearable), very floppy / no body ( jumper degraded to gardening after six weeks 😢). The garments made from several fabrics, the fabrics don’t ‘go together’ they are different weights and so pull out of shape all the time.

Its a shame.

My top tip is to spend an afternoon on Vinted clicking on stuff you like the look of. The algorithm will pick up what you like and recommend more stuff.
Then just favourite what you really like and eventually you will basically have a Pinterest board worth of ideas.

Its a cheap easy way of playing with your style.

Oh amazing, lots for me to go at. Thanks everyone.

@Zonder ...wow they are very hippy. I'd definitely wear leggings from there for yoga. I'm not out there enough to wear a full outfit. I do like tie-dye but not when it's all the rainbow colours.

I love deep purples and earthy greens.

@KeirSpoutsTwaddle yeah I hate shopping though. When I buy I buy with intent I never really just browse, so it's hard to gradually pick things up. When I was a teenager every Saturday we'd look for clothes and only ever buy when we liked. Obvs with a family and work I don't have the time for that now.

Go to Glastonbury (the town not the festival...although the festival used to be very bohemian, don't know if it still is)!

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 19/08/2024 11:44

I browse on holiday- it’s an accepted part of it! Places like Shrewsbury, Harrogate and York have nice charity shops!

Mairzydotes · 19/08/2024 13:03

Add bits in gradually to your current wardrobe.

So bags and accessories . Scarves for the autumn. And a jacket/ coat that you consider to be boho.

Do your nails in your preferred boho colours.

Markets and gift shops can be good for bits. And etsy.

Trawl vinted and eBay for items from when boho was the trend. Particularly going out/evening clothes for day wear. Monsoon and East were always slightly boho , and Joe Brown's.
