After decluttering, I can finally shop my wardrobe.

Just that really. It took four long days. I tried on hundreds of items. I took bags and bags of clothes and shoes to the charity shop (A lot with tags on 😬). Anything tatty was binned, as was mismatched underwear.

I discovered that rather than having nothing to wear, I have loads. And now these outfits are washed, ironed and paired together in my wardrobe.

I don’t know why I’m posting this. Perhaps it will inspire someone else. A warning, it gets worse before it gets better and on many an occasion, I was tempted to bag it all up and chuck it back in the attic, but I didn’t.
It’s a good feeling to finally get it done and now I have a wardrobe of lovely clothes that fit me and work with my lifestyle.

Over how long had you acquired your wardrobe OP? It must be a good feeling to be streamlined and organised again!

Gowlett · 18/08/2024 12:53

Yes! I needed to read this today. Well done to you!

I have loads (I mean loads!) of beautiful clothes. No fast fashion, all good stuff. But, it’s all too much, most of it going unworn. A lot of it not even my style anymore (too young for me!). I really want a style-reinvention. And a new haircut too! I could also do with binning a load of old make-up, etc…

How did you go about it? Were you brutal? I think I just need to get out the black bags, and bring the rest to the charity shop. I’d like to just get access to what I’ll actually still wear (and not hang on to lovely things from years ago, or live the same boring stuff that’s easy to find). I need a new look!

Same as you, there’s loads of shoes that can go (Sex And The City was a long time ago!). I’m really excited about this!

Many, many years. I have clothes sizing from 10 (probably an 8 now) to 16. I’m a solid 14 and have been for several years.
My problem ( one of many!), is I can’t resist a bargain, so have bought lots of things in the sales.

It’s a great feeling! I think the clutter overwhelming me.

That's brilliant OP, I've started to do the same, after feeling like a hoarder for years. It gives you such a sense of pride and achievement, doesn't it? I'm also doing it with my beauty products too as I'm ashamed to see how much I've bought over the years and half-used them. It's been very hard to get my head around it all and start the project as I think I have undiagnosed adhd...certainly somewhere on the asd spectrum and my collections of all things that gave me two seconds of "happiness" gave me tons of anxiety when I could see how messy I was getting.

AgathaMystery · 18/08/2024 12:59

Well done OP. I did the same recently. I now have a much more manageable wardrobe and all of it fits me. Such bliss.

It’s a tricky one having clothes in different sizes isn’t it. I’m currently a size smaller than I typically have been (I know! Nice problem to have 😂) and I’m tempted to get rid of the bigger things I’m no longer using as they’re too big. But I don’t want to find myself regretting their loss if I put weight on again (though I’m trying not to!). I’d love to have the extra space in my wardrobe but I don’t want to regret getting rid of perfectly good (too big) things. Aaargh.

10weekcountdown · 18/08/2024 13:03

@Gowlett go for it! Honestly, I have been putting this off for years. I feel so free now (a tad dramatic 😉).
I started by really looking what suited me, my shape and lifestyle. I created Pinterest boards with what I liked and what would suit me. Worked out what colours went well and what shapes looked good. Ignored fashion - I look bloody awful in puffed sleeve midi dresses - structured clothing has always looked better.
Ive stated and given up several times, but this time something just clicked. I took all my listings off Vinted and just donated it. I needed it out of the house.

It’s Sales with me as well. I can’t say no to a bargain…
But, yes. I’m overwhelmed here. I need to stop shopping!

10weekcountdown · 18/08/2024 13:21

@MakemineaGandT I binned my size 16’s because I didn’t want to be that size again. I also binned the size 10’s (kept the 12’s), because I doubt very much I will get down to that size again.

Gowlett · 18/08/2024 13:25

My smaller stuff needs to go. Even when I lost weight, I couldn’t get into them (8 & 10 was tiny back then, as was I).

10weekcountdown, I’m just going to bite the bullet.
As icantbelieveitsnotnutter said, I am a hoarder…

10weekcountdown · 18/08/2024 13:27

@Icantbelieveitsnotnutter totally agree. I think the clutter was making me anxious. The high of a sale bargain or make-up purchase is so fleeting and then you’re left with even more clutter.

Well done OP, I’m impressed.

Earlier In the year I dropped a a dress size and I’ve used that as a push to overhaul my wardrobe.

Although I’ve not been as successful as you - there’s definitely more work to do - it makes such as difference to how I feel about my clothes.

I’ve replaced nearly all my tatty stuff with much nice versions (instead of six pairs of crappy faded sports leggings, I now have two pairs of Lulu Lemon in lovely colours. I swapped out an ancient and hideous cardigan for lounging for a lovely cashmere hoodie)

im also tracking everything I wear.

the sizing is causing me a bit of stress as I’m between sizes at the moment and I don’t want to get rid of the size above even though I hope they will remain too big for forever, but I’ve at least put them away.

henlake7 · 18/08/2024 13:57

Im all for a good declutter, its very cathartic isnt it?😁

Im at the opposite side of things though. Have just replaced all my wardrobe this year in a previously unheard of size 10 (mostly sales/vinted) and now I get all the fun of experimenting with looks and trying it all out!
But if I havent worn something for a year then I will probably donate it.

Wigglytails · 18/08/2024 14:02

Brilliant 🤩 and so inspiring. Good for you.

ive also dropped a dress size and am getting rid of anything now too big

I’m also a bit OTT on bright colours that no longer work for me so will be aiming to only buy neutrals this autumn to try and create a more luxurious look that can be mixed and matched.

any good IG accounts to get inspiration (at high street prices) would be very much appreciated.

Andnowshesatoddler · 18/08/2024 16:15

I really want to do just this.

I have ordered myself a clothes rail with two rails I'll use this to help me organise it.

Also a sale shopper which leads to clothes soup and not much that forms actual outfits!

GreenPoppy · 18/08/2024 16:25

Well done OP. I should do the same but find it hard with clothes, the rest of my house is pretty uncluttered.

I start but I keep thinking 'what if...I lost weight, got a formal office job again, go to a wedding...' or look at the quality of something and think how much it would be to replace.

I did make a start with shoes last weeks, there is no way I will ever wear sky-high stilettos again, so they have gone on Vinted (having not worn some of them for 15 years or more, just had them cluttering up the wardrobe).

Gowlett · 19/08/2024 18:04

I’ve started… The amount of clothes!
And shoes, and bags, and scarves…

HappyGirlNow · 20/08/2024 21:06

Love this thread, I’ve done the same this year. Still got too much but manageable now and I am enjoying my clothes more and can see what I have. Still want to get rid of more and I’ll do that gradually.
