Hi, my 13 year old son has just started getting a lot of acne across his forehead - it’s pretty covered. I am going to take him to the doctor but I would be interested to hear from anyone who can recommended products/treatments.

Thanks 🙏🏼

I swear by the ordinary products.

I never had acne as such but used to suffer from really bad breakouts. On the ordinary website they have an online chat where I explained my skin problems and they put together a skin care routine for me.

There products are reasonably priced too so it's definitely worth a shot

Bump and so I can come back and see what people recommend as dd is the same

Benzyl Peroxide but make sure you allocate him his own towel as it bleaches towels!

Salicylic acid face wash - Inkey list do a cheap one. I can't get my kid to remember to do it regularly enough, but I can tell when they have remembered as the difference is almost instant. Just tones down the angry redness a lot.

My boy has breakouts. He is trying micellar water to clean properly at night. Facial scrub once a week. The we found a tea tree oil spot wand which is excellent. From Superdrug. Sudocrem at night for bad ones it is also apparent that his breakouts are linked to eating crap. Good food and lots of water def helps.

I use Zineryt from Dr Fox.

Stops them spreading and almost gone after a week. X

Duac (prescription from GP) helped DS - used sparingly

ToBeOrNotToBee · 17/08/2024 16:03

Salicylic daily cleanser. I use this one, picked up a bottle from TK Maxx for £5 and my skin is so healthy.
The Dr will give a 6 week course of Lymecycline which helps.

Even though I have the below routine but I don't suggest this for under 18 so you can start with face wash, cleansers and spf for now. Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
la roche posay spf
Evening:
la roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Zinc facial wash. Its amazing for acne.

Lovetotravel123 · 17/08/2024 20:56

The only thing that helped me as a teen was a kind of roll-on medicine from the GP. Worked very well.

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 17/08/2024 21:02

Same as Lovetotravel123. I had a roll on from the GP at one point. I remember it being like a greenish liquid. Helped me at the time

My sister had a lot of success washing with hibiscrub. Its drying though so a decent, calming moisturiser is a good idea.
Also, dots for spots

A face wash with salicylic acid in. I use a very soft face brush, it’s like a gentle exfoliation. If I clean his face myself, I 100% can see improvement the next morning (DS is nd)
I use the Nivea derma (on Amazon, cheap) and also picked up an Asda own brand tea tree tube. I had a couple of those hormonal spots coming up, painful ones. Put that tube on at night, they didn’t even fully form.

My son uses these:

victoriahealth.com/salicylic-acid-2-serum/

victoriahealth.com/niacinamide-5-serum/

victoriahealth.com/hyaluronic-acid-serum/

He's the same age and it's really helped. Quick to apply - he uses it before bed.

As you are planning to, seeing the GP is the way forward. You say his forehead is covered in acne. It will just get worse. The GP can start your son on prescription strength treatment, according to NICE guidelines for treating acne. It is a step wise approach and treatment can be added according to the response. Alongside prescription treatment, your son could use Cerave skincare. They do two good cleansing washes with salicylic acid and their pm night moisturiser with niacinamide helps support the skin barrier and is non comedogenic so won’t cause any further spots. (It can be used morning and night).
