53 and a beauty counter virgin

I am 53 and I have no idea how to go about using the beauty counters in department stores! I really want to update my look a little and get some skincare and make up more suitable for my age. I do not really have a skincare routine at the moment other than washing my face and sticking on some Roche-Posay moisturiser.

What do I do? There are so many counters I don’t know where to start and I don’t want to feel pressured into spending a fortune at one counter and then thinking they would have had better products at another! But I also don’t want to waste someone’s time. Do I just pick one and rock up? Or make an appointment? How does one do that?

I have a friendly local department store with MAC, Clarins, Clinique etc and a budget of I guess around £150 for a bit of skincare, something to fill my enormous pores and acne scars and something to brighten up my face…cream blusher/miracle balm???

i just think I’m going to look a right tit and and up spending a fortune on stuff I won’t use because I’ll be too embarrassed to say no to anything 😬

I think for makeup then it depends on what look you are going for. I think Bobbi Brown would be good if you want a natural look. I think in terms of skin care that the off the shelf brands are worth a look in terms of price etc. hopefully someone will come along who has more experience with skin care as mine is pretty basic in terms of eye serum, serum, moisturiser and SPF.

You need the Selfridges Beauty Concierge Makeover service. Scroll down:

Selfridges Beauty Concierge

That links to Manchester but I assume it’s available at most branches. They curate a selection of products from various brands for you to try - and the cost of the service is redeemable against whatever you choose to buy.
