Skirt for curvy, not plus size, DD

We are at our wits end. I suspect we are finding out that, as often comes up in these threads, sizing is all over the place.

DD needs a short black skirt. Above knee, but not too mini, fitted, stretchy. She has tried on a few through Next from various brands. She doesn't have ££.

She started with 8's, then 6's. They are all massive in the waist. What is going on??

She is probably unusual, although not completely out of the norm, in that she is slim, but goes to the gym, so fit and muscly. Her waist is 25, her hips 39. Where do these super fit athletes buy their clothes from?

Any ideas MN's other than buy what she can, and get it altered, which is more ££.

They probably have them altered to fit their physiques. Could you take in the skirts at the waist or get a tailor/seamstress to do it?

That's a v curvy hip-waist ratio. I think she'll either have to go stretchy or you'll need to buy a skirt to fit her hips and get a tailor to take in the waist. Shouldn't cost too much.

This is knee length on 5'6

Does it really have to be fitted or would a skater style work?

LiterallyOnFire · 13/08/2024 17:35

I've spent most of my life 24" W & 37" H, which is not quite the ratio your DD has but nothing ever fits.

Get alterations, learn to do your own, or buy stretch jersey are the three options, annoyingly. (Fourth would be to get everything made bespoke, I guess.)

NTmumAutisticteenagemeltdowns · 13/08/2024 20:58

Similar ratio here, I find a line skirts can work well.

Do they not ride up?

Do they not ride up?

No, how would they? They get wider towards the bottom so they always fall back to the neutral point if you've got a narrow waist and wide hips. I guess they would if you're apple shaped. Pencil skirts ride up massively on me because once they've got past my arse and thighs there's no contact to counter it.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/08/2024 21:20

Usually a stretch type pencil skirt does the job for me

LiterallyOnFire · 13/08/2024 21:28

I'm some kind of pear/ hourglass mash up @StamppotAndGravy but I'm starting to think I'm a weird variant. Grin

But this is the thing..... She's tried on lots of stretchy skirts but the waists are still at least 2 inches wider than stated in the size charts. They are not body shaped, just kind of straight, boxy shapes, essentially square.

She was born in the wrong era. The 1950's would have suited her well.

She has a skater skirt in jersey, which may have to do. She just wanted something a bit more sophisticated.

What she really needs is something like her old school skirts!!!! They had two elastics in the waists with buttons for adjustment. At 21 she may not be up for it, but it's actually a really good concept.

Just buy from the school skirts range?

StamppotAndGravy · 14/08/2024 06:30

Cos trousers have elastic and buttons for grownups. Their skirts might too, but you'd want to buy them from vinted

KnittedCardi · 21/08/2024 22:55

We gave up.on skirts, she's found some lovely trousers. Trousers, of course are tailored, so you can buy by waist, by length. She's found a pair of 25" short, pleated, A&F trousers nearly new. They look soooo good. She's happy. We did also find a cheaper, stretchy, high waisted pair in M&S that would have done, but not half as nice. All is well.
