Hair extensions

Hi all looking for some advice.. I've always had fine hair and over the last couple of years its become pretty thin too, with my scalp becoming quite visable around the crown. I had been considering hair extensions but was worried about making my hair worse that I have instead concentrated on hair health e.g regular trims, no heat, no dye, weekly hair masks etc however i miss wearing my hair down and it not looking so thin/boring and unstyled! So anyway hairdresser has suggested 20-25 nanos for volume only but I can't decide to go for it or not! Anyone had nanos for volume in thin hair and would recommend?!

I have no experience of nanos so will be watching for advice!

I do however, have super thin hair. I’ve had tapes in the past which are strips of hair, that added volume. I had 8 altogether.

If I stood completely still then they looked great but the reality was, the tiniest bit of movement/wind etc and they were really visible which I thought looked shit. I just became obsessed with making sure they were covered up and in the end I gave up.

Annoyingly, I think that any kind of extensions only really work well if you have enough hair to cover up the fact that you’re wearing them.

I genuinely think at some point down the line I’ll have to wear a full wig.

Let’s hope someone comes along with some good suggestions!

Hi, I was a hair extension wearer for years!

I loved glue bonds but stay away, the do ruin your hair in the sense that once they come out, your hair will feel very thin - it's how it was before the extensions, but it's hard to adjust to.

Nanos are great for being able to move up and down, and with patience and practice, you can do them yourself. What I would say though is the amount you've been suggested is nowhere near enough to make a difference, I would aim for 50-100 for volume

I have hair extensions but my hair isn’t thinning like yours is.

Nanos seem to damage your hair the least but they’re not the most natural.

Keratin bonds look the most natural but the removal process will take a lot of your natural hair out! But I think they’re the best option for someone with thin hair.

With nanos, you do lose a lot of hair with removal and refits too. Hairdressers claim it is merely your natural hair shed, the same as if you didn’t have extensions in, but this isn’t. With any hair extensions, your hair can get slightly tangled at the point the extension is attached to your hair (your roots). When you don’t have extensions in, you can easily comb your tangles out of your roots. When you have extensions in, the tangles stay in until the extensions are removed and get worse in the interim. So when you get them taken out, they comb out the knots and A LOT of hair does come out. I’m always surprised by the amount of my hair that is on the floor during a hair extension appointment.

I don’t think my natural hair is necessarily super thin now, but it’s not the same as it was pre-extensions.

maybe the hairdresser suggested that because of OP’s hair loss though. You still need enough hair to hide the bonds

You could always look at hair toppers or integrated hair systems to add volume. Toppers can be clipped in or attached with bonds and adjusted every 6ish weeks. There are specialist salons that provide these services. Basically, the extensions are attached to a lace mesh Base, with your own hair pulled through and secured that way.

I have these brilliant nanos that are flat.
I have thin hair and they are the best. Also I have needed to take them out myself on a few occassions (MRI) and it was easy and no problem.

I had glue-in bonds way back in 2017 and they ruined my hair. These flat nano ones are a world away from that.

I've had extensions for the last 8 or so years. Have given me so much more confidence. I have very fine hair and have found that the less hair you have, the less extensions you need. For volume you could get away with 50 if you don't have much of your own hair. It will make a huge difference

Thanks for all the replies, I feel I've made some progress with my hair as scalp looking less visable so im hoping its filling in a bit but its still so thin in the length and I know extensions would make it look so much better but on other hand will I be causing future hair loss, decisions, decisions!
