What trousers and boots for autumn/winter?

My go-to autumn and winter outfits are skinny jeans, chunky jumpers/long cardigans and ankle boots, but I'm aware that this combo is now deeply unfashionable(!)

I've been loving wearing mom jeans and wide leg trousers over the summer but I really feel the cold, and can't wear jeans/trousers with a gap at the ankle in the winter. And I'm also not too keen on wide leg trousers when it's wet (I also think they are hard to style with boots).

What's the alternative? I'm happy to stick with my skinny jeans and boots, but I want to look vaguely stylish...

I could have written this post myself.
I have no advice unfortunately but here's hoping someone does!
For autumn I have just bought some wde leg trousers to wear with white trainers that have a really thick sole ( seems to be alot of those around at the moment), but have no idea about winter. I also found skinny jeans tucked into boots practical and warm, not sure what to replace with this year!

Skinny jeans are definitely more practical for winter. I also find it difficult to style winter coats with wide leg jeans - just end up looking like the michlen man!

Same problem here! I feel like wide leg jeans look better with shorter coats but in the depths of winter and standing around a playground I want to wear my long puffer coat! Hoping for some inspiration here too as have definitely fallen out of love with my skinny jeans the last few years so don’t really want to wear those.

I wear slim straight leg jeans so they aren't trailing on the ground and wicking moisture up my legs. They suit my shape better as well.

I think fashion leaders must live somewhere where it never rains and never gets too cold.

I like slim straight leg jeans as well, but when I've tried them with boots they look very odd. Maybe OK with heeled boots, but flat boots don't seem to work.

Same here. While I would happily keep wearing my unstylish skinnies I have ongoing lichen sclerosis that is triggered by wearing both tight trousers and tights so I spent most of last winter wearing joggers 90% of time, wide-legged trousers on the days I went into the office and looser jeans to go out. But I agree styling a looser jean with cosy tops/jackets is really hard.

CurlyWurly1991 · 01/09/2024 11:53

Following for some ideas. I am topping up my autumn wardrobe and really don’t suit skinnies. For work I find dresses, tights and boots easiest for rainy days (which let’s face it is about 5 continuous months more or less). Then dry days I have slim black trousers but no idea re shoes. Wide leg trousers, cords and jeans suit my body type best (pear) but finding rain-suitable shoes is a minefield. Ballet flats or loafers are very uncomfortable for me and trainers only suitable for non-work, internal meetings and office days. So what the heck do fashionable women do ?!

CurlyWurly1991 · 01/09/2024 11:58

Perhaps a smart trainer that doesn’t look like a trainer is the answer… no thick white soles…

Following, think I posted this last year and still don't know! I see some influencers suggesting pointed toe boots with a small heel which I'm not sure about! Slim leg jeans with boots feel quite dated also. Might just stick with the wide leg/trainers combo for now.

henlake7 · 01/09/2024 12:40

Im going fairly basic. Jeans in wide legged, bootleg and mom style. A couple of new pairs of wide legged tailored trousers (grey pinstripe and chocolate plaid).
As for boots just bog standard chelsea boots and will probably buy a cheap pair of DM dupes from somewhere.

and then at some point it will get so cold and miserable I will morph into my fur lined Primark leggings, a giant jumper and snowboots, which is my freezing weather outfit of choice!

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 01/09/2024 21:16

I can relate! I have a few pairs of widelegs, in viscose and heavy jersey, but there only seems to be a small window for wearing them. They're too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

Last winter I discovered the joys of wideleg cords, which are very cosy with thermal leggings. And they look good with thick jumpers, which the lighter fabrics don't. I wear them with chunky flat boots or trainers, and haven't found puddle-wicking to be a problem (I am tall though!)

I also wear straight leg jeans, which tend to be a bit baggy on me, with oversized jumpers and hiker boots. But like you OP I'm biding my time for the return of the skinny!

justflewinfromthewindycity · 02/09/2024 12:10

I have gave up looking for jeans that suit me that aren't skinny
I've just bought some new dark skinny's and I feel good in them so will wear them.
I have bought these trousers from river island after being influenced on Instagram and love them (not for rainy days tho )

What trousers and boots for autumn/winter?

I wear either girlfriend style jeans or bootleg, both look good with boots. I need new boots this winter though and I'm debating bog standard Chelsea or western style.

I wear bootcut/flared jeans with a heeled ankle boot- I'm in my 30s and in my teens aspired to the smart looking women in this look so that makes it feel "cool" enough for me! It also really suits my shape, which has got me some lovely compliments, which adds to the good feeling, whether it's stylish or not is not up to me!!!

Wrong thread - I've reported!

Straight/boyfriend/relaxed jeans look good with DMs or other similar chunky/lace up boots. I think the trick is to get the jeans to be the right length - slightly cropped so they’re just above the boots. You can always roll/cuff them.

Yes this is my approach for daily life - but a bit tricky with work. I don’t think I can get away with DMs in my job, although Chelsea type boots are OK. I got some in a sale from
New Look for £15 (obv not leather) but they have been surprisingly good. Will try rolling up the tapered black trousers with them…
