Are Dr Martens really worth it?

So I'm fed up of buying a new pair of boots every winter. It's annoying and obviously terrible for the environment.

I'm looking for a more durable option and I'm wondering if Dr Martens are really worth the price? I'm put off by reading how uncomfortable they are for ages.

So, are they worth the money and effort?

My DM sandals just arrived and I flippin love them. Hope they last.

Which ones are they @chocolatesaltyballs22 . A colleague has some and they look great on her but she has small pretty feet. I don't

What boots only last one winter? Doc Martens were cripplingly unwearable for me but I've never had to buy new boots every winter.

I have boots that are years and years old.

Same! What are you doing with them?
I have absolute cheapest new look and primark pairs that have lasted for a few years (it's why I don't get the "vimes boot theory" that everyone trots out smugly as financial gospel!) - buy cheap, buy twice might have been relevant 50 years ago but nowadays a lot of "quality" is just produced in the same workshop as "budget" with a much higher mark up.

But in answer to your actual q -I bought dm dupes from m&s last year. Real leather but soft so didnt need any wearing in and are lasting pretty well. I think they were about £65 but I tried them on in store and ended up buying a brand new pair with all the labels from vinted for about £20 -for that price I wouldn't mind even if they didn't last more than a year.

These ones. They look great on. I didn't expect to love them this much.

Another shout out for Blundstones, but I've also found that Timberland boots go on and on (and are really comfortable) - they usually have a chelsea boot style or two as well as lace-ups. Because they're seen as fashion boots, you can usually get really good deals when the latest style goes out of fashion.

For quality and immediate wearability with no blisters and lasting for years and actually being waterproof I would go for Ariat.

I needed to replace my doc martens boots that I only got 3 winter's out of before they were useless. Saw this thread and went to Solovair instead. They arrived today and they are absolutely brilliant. I went for the matt leather option and they are surprisingly soft. Would definitely recommend. The boots feel like docs did back in the 90s

mitogoshi · 13/08/2024 19:59

Very good timing for this thread, debating whether to go for solovair or lanx now

ZiggyZowie · 13/08/2024 20:03

I got a pair of black 8 hole ankle boots from Sports Direct online that were £30 and look quite like Dr Martens, they even have the little "pull" at the back.

Very comfortable and have lasted several years and no sign of wear

HansHolbein · 13/08/2024 21:44

I’ve been wearing Dr Marten Chelsea boots for 6 years now.

dudsville · 14/08/2024 09:10

I wonder if modern DM's need to be considered separately from the past, for their own merits currently. I didn't wear dms in my youth because I wasn't cool. When I was young one of the worst social crimes one could commit was trying to swim outside of one's lane in fashion.

A change in style, now about 5 or 6 years ago, meant I started wearing this style of shoe and boot. I tried Lanx, solovair, blundstones, and one other I can't remember.... the nanettes boot? Anyway, DMs are the best for me. Very comfortable, certainly the more affordable of the above, I love them.

mellowfell · 14/08/2024 09:21

I've had mine for about 6 years and they've lasted very long because I couldn't break into them and no longer can face the torture of burning and blisters.
