“Young” outfit for a 40 year old to wear to a 30th? Help!

I’ve changed my username to Honey Monster because that’s how I feel when I try and dress up.

I’m a size 12/14 but top heavy in that I’ve got wide shoulders and a big rib cage. I’ve got really good legs, but they look unbalanced with my bigger top half.

I know I look better in low v necks/wrap tops and with some sort of sleeve.

I’ve got a 30th in a few weeks with my young and beautiful workmates. What on earth do I wear to feel good and not like an aging honey monster? I’d be so grateful for any ideas. I want to aim for ‘glam night out in a pub’, not ‘wedding guest’ if that makes sense?

Please help me hate the way I look a bit less.

I read before high waisted flattens your bum.
Wide leg are better more flattering for wider hips

Hi OP, you sound like you have a similar figure to me - I have broad shoulders and narrow hips and good legs.

Why don’t you look at shorts? There was an article in the Sunday Times Style magazine about how shorts are the style of the Summer; from formal wear to work wear to city sightseeing.

I would pair tailored shorts with an oversized shirt; or if it’s more of a pub vibe, pair denim bermudas with a shirt. Look at Gigi or Bella Hadid for inspiration.

Everyone, of every age, from Kate Moss to the Hadids ; is wearing shorts - so don’t feel
you are too old. Always remember- in 10 years time you will look back at photos and think how young you were and wish you had enjoyed it more!!! (That’s true for every age).

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle
It's all relative these days though, most people in supermarkets are wearing comfies. In the OP's situation you want to elevate a bit without going too full on.

But that's not "edgy" - that's everyday clothes that don't have florals.

I know but as you say, it means different things to different people. If your friends all wear ditsy print frocks, other styles might seem edgy.

How to fit in sort of depends on your workmates. Are they likely to be in tiny BooHoo frocks with cut outs everywhere or a patterned maxi with a shirred waist?

Probably somewhere in the middle. Their budgets will be beyond Boohoo type outfits, but I’d expect body con, mini dresses and flawless hair and make up.

I think 'edgy' depends on context. In this case I'm taking it to mean 'not girly, please don't suggest a floral dress and white trainers' rather than high fashion.

Yes, I think that’s what I mean. . . can you tell I just have no idea!?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

If they're going to be dressy and you have good legs, what about a shirt like the ones I suggested tucked into with a black mini skirt? With pointed flats or sandals. If you're going for heels I'd suggest something dressed down like these (on sale, excellent price), not any higher.

This sounds like a good idea to try. Maybe a short with a mini skirt or shorts. Thanks.

That Zara skirt is great. I would wear that and I am over a decade older than you. I don't really consider my age when dressing.
Off to order skirt.

I'd wear this too. Even at 52.
