I’ve known for years that talc often con hand in hand with asbestos.

It’s not something new, I suppose if you’re not someone who checks the ingredients in make-up this could be a concern.

Unfortunately talc isn't the only mineral that can contain asbestos. Mica can too, as can Kaolin iirc. All mined minerals can be contaminated. What you need to look out for is responsible mining practices and quality testing.

With regards to cornstarch, it can cause terrible break outs and allergic reactions if the formulation does not have an effective enough preservative in because asa you can imagine bacteria will feed on it. Preservatives in cosmetics come with other health concerns. Some have hormonal effects and cross the skin barrier which is a risk concerning cancers. Some cause sensitivity and allergic reactions, some are harmful to the lungs if breathed in.

So my conclusion is to look at the statements cosmetic companies give regarding mining practices and the safety of their ingredients (and cross reference) and make your decisions from there.

Needless to say it is illegal to sell asbestos contaminated makeup in the uk! There are regulations. However information detailing how often manufacturers are inspected and the results does not seem to be available to the general public.

There is also a difference between being described as 'asbestos free' and 'no detectable asbestos'. The former standard is higher and requires more rigorous testing.

Never mind in make-up; try in your child's classroom. It's everywhere in schools. My classroom is full of 'no-go' areas, marked on a map in the caretaker's office, which are supposedly safe as long as no-one nudges a tile or scuffs a carpet. It's nerve-wracking.
