At home nail care?

Monkeyjump · 06/08/2024 11:07

I'm looking for some tips for at home nail care please. My nails are generally not good.. really short nail beds, rough uneven cuticles, prone to splitting. I bite them a bit sometimes when I'm stressed. Everyone seems to go for gel manicures these days as part of their basic beauty regime. They look lovely but when i've tried them they don't last at all and just trash my nails further. So they're not for me.
I just want to have nice natural healthy presentable nails that I'll paint myself occasionally!

CND Rescue rx twice a day on bare nails and a cuticle oil twice a day. Mine no longer flake and peel. Tried opi repair mode and wasn't as impressed.
You can do oil soaks where you use a bowl of oil over a bowl of warm water and soak your nails for 20 mins, not sure how often this is recommended but I'd say twice a week to start with.

Thank you for your reply. With the oil soaks is there a certain oil to use or same as the cuticle oil?

You want a manicure with someone, probably a trained beautician (think about going to the local college for a conditioning manicure), where they look at the health and condition of the nail / hand and can carry out a therapy approach, so improving the skin, nourishing the nail and cuticle, even carrying out a hand massage. You can try a paraffin wax treatment at home, or ask for a paraffin wax nail / hand treatment in a salon, which helps with the condition of the skin (lovely on feet too) and then use a sweet almond oil to soak the nails in at home - both are cheap and very easy to do on a regular basis and google for how to do this yourself if you want to have a go at home. Once you get the skin and the nail feeling better, it will help with the strength too and then use a product to enhance their look, alongside a regime of keeping them well moisturised.

I think jojoba or olive oil

Cuticle oil and gently push back cuticles with an orange stick or nails.
File daily including rough skin at sides.

Vitamin D tablets. Cheap as chips.

when I forget to take them for a period of time I 100% notice the difference in my nails. Mine are naturally thin and brittle. Vit D makes them a lot better.

I suffered for years with thin, awful nails as a result of gel polish. Even my toenails were thin as paper.

I discovered OPI keratin, which you apply every day for 2 weeks, twice a day and then a few times a week. The only thing I do now is remove the dead cuticle with a metal stick remover. I don’t wear polish unless I’m going out and even then only removable polish.

i scrub my feet and go to bed with Margaret DABBS Foot lotion twice a week and I’m so surprised at how nice natural short fingernails and toenails with soft feet look.

Jojoba is supposed to be the best one for nails due to the small molecule size. I do a warm oil soak after taking polish off.

OPI nail envy, a really good cuticle oil (Jessica phenomen oil is the best), weekly gently push back cuticles. If nails are uneven gently use a 3 sided buffer. They'll be improved in no time!
