Business attire for sixth form?

This requires some kind of suit. I am thinking that it would be more practical to wear trousers than a skirt probably wide legged or boot cut. And also that a collarless/lapel-less jacket with a collarless shirt or sweater underneath would also be more practical and streamlined.

what do others think? Any links to suggested looks or items appreciated. (Clothes will need to be machine washable and affordable and in navy/grey/black)

You seem to be focusing on what will make her look fashionable in a real world sense. Which is a nice ambition but this kid has got to go to sixth form for two years.

She needs a cheap shoddy suit and either a Lycra bodycon skirt or whatever HER preferred style is like everyone else.

Sixth formers just wear something like jeans and a T-shirt don’t they? All of mine did.

Good luck with the studies!

One of mine wore his own clothes at FE college, but the other is staying at school sixth form where they have to wear uniform which is different from the reception - year 11 uniform.

she doesn’t want to wear what looks like unbranded uniform. Happy not to buy a lot so she can see what everyone else is wearing/what she can get away with.

however she will need to wear something resembling school requirements for the first week and she will need an outfit for work experience interviews - hence my question.

was looking for style advice but seem to have come to the wrong place!

Ok. - machine washable to avoid dry cleaning costs.

and the collared thing is because I think collars on both blouses and jackets are a real faff plus I am trying to find an outfit that mirrors more what people actually wear in the office

I know I can find a cheap skirt suit that looks like school uniform without the logo but that is not really what I want.

What does your dd want @Stopsnowing ?

Surely that’s pretty important here too!

tobee · 03/08/2024 15:04

My ds had to do this but not my dd. It was put as getting used to the world of work or something for ds. But then most of them were likely to go to university where they are going to be spending 3/4 years wearing scruffy jeans etc. Unless they are Jacob Rees Mogg.

Sorry not helpful re actual question

Our Sixth form dress code was smart office wear but had to be suits and tie for males and the equivalent for females.

They changed it last year and Sixth form now wear uniform of black trousers or skirts, white polo t shirts with the school logo on and a burgundy sweater with the school logo on. Years 10 and 11 wear the same with grey sweaters and years 7 to 9 wear blazers with different colour ties per year group.

None of the Sixth form places round here let you wear your own clothes.

Next do reasonably priced washable separates for men and women. They are pretty good value but also if you find out which size you could have a look on Vinted for something second hand. DD had a couple of jackets from there plus a selection of co ordinating short skirts from wherever (some not much more than a stretchy tube and others slightly more structured) plus one pair of wide legged high waisted washable loose fit trousers. Selection of shirt/blouses,
stretchy tops and thin knitwear. We read the uniform policy and then looked through the whole school website at all photos of both teachers and students to see what they were actually wearing which was somewhat different to the written policy. Vinted would be a very good place to shop once you know sizes for different brands.

Matalan have a slightly more corporate/dressy section which would probably be washable.

Next is also good for office wear but mostly online now.

When I did my PGCE I sort of created my own uniform. For me it was linen mix trousers (comfortable, wash well and if yo put them on a hanger out of the washer no ironing) and different blouses, they were all the same but different colours and patterns.

At one school I had to add a jacket.

What is DD comfortable wearing?

Stopsnowing · 24/08/2024 21:35

Update - perfect jackets from Mango and Matalan. Got wide legged trousers and some collarless cheap tops. Dd v happy but suspect she will be swayed by what everyone else is wearing when she gets there!
