40th soon, dh taking me out to a fancy spa hotel and restaurant. Looking for a nice dress which doesn't expose my bingo wings! Nothing tightly fitted either! I'm on a budget so anything £50 and under?!
I live in oversized mum wear of baggy tshirts and chino shorts to need to make an effort! Thanks

i shop with YOURS... they are not badly priced and fit well

Lj8893 · 02/08/2024 21:00

I see Yours suggested all the time, my local Yours shop is awful though, full of misshaped leggings and naff oversized slogan tops, so I must be missing something?

or maybe i'm just fat and frumpy 😂

Lj8893 · 02/08/2024 21:28

No I see people rave about Yours very often and then when I go in the shop I just don’t get it! My local shop is tiny though so maybe if I went to a bigger store or looked online I would see better potential!

Have a look on Popsy clothing

TheSquareMile · 02/08/2024 23:59

Cobalt blue

Milk maid

Floral

I feel like I'm always recommending this site, I do not work for them but honestly love their pieces and as a larger lady they make me feel great! Worth having a look at their website as they have so many different designs.

New look have got loads of dresses in the sale, I bought a really nice Apricot green/blue leopard print style wrap dress for a friend party this weekend - cost less than £20!

These always pop up on my Facebook! What are the sizing like @TheLadyIsAVamp ?

TheLadyIsAVamp · 03/08/2024 00:43

@familyissues12345 they're spot on, honestly I have so many items from them and everything has been true to size and excellent quality. I don't think they have any in stock at the moment but I first purchased some lounge sets from them and have since bought so many dresses and tops and have loved them all!

Have you considered renting, @246810k?

Look at what £50 could get you from, for instance:

Hurr Collective

(Filtered for size 18 and sorted by newness.)

Oh my goodness, yes. There's heaps of gorgeous Rixo dresses, a couple of Alemais and loads of other great options. I like this one, but loads of others too.

This is beautiful. I would absolutely rent instead of buy at this price.

Lj8893 · 03/08/2024 15:08

That Ted baker dress is lovely but depending on the OPs shape, has the potential to be a bit sacklike.
And since she has said her legs are her best feature, I think she could get away with something shorter to show them off!

SapatSea · 03/08/2024 16:03

Lots of sales online at present. I've not bought from them but Roman and M&Co have lots of size 18 dresses on sale at great prices.

I think those shops are a little “mature” for the OP. Even My 65 year old DM always says she feels like an old lady when she goes in those shops!

Lj8893 · 03/08/2024 17:03

I love those disturbia ones! And they obviously wouldn’t look as gothy or alternative as they look on the models with their make up and hair etc.

I'm 65. I wouldn't consider anything from those sites/ shops.

On a budget of £50 I would look at charity/ vintage/ second hand; or hire; or a good quality cotton or viscose day dress from any brand that does good quality cotton or viscose day dresses and if need be bling it up with second hand charity shop costume jewellery. Or Cos or Nobody's Child.

I would feel far more dressed up in a good quality cotton dress than a £50 or less "going out" dress

I completely agree.
Why does 40 and size 18 seem to always = Roman on mumsnet!

Lj8893 · 03/08/2024 19:51

On the Cos link there is a gorgeous green flared t-shirt dress which would look lovely dressed up with heels and jewellery. Hair, make up etc.

Obviously depending on your colouring OP as green isn’t for everyone!
