Roka backpack

I am really interested Roka backpack but I have noticed the straps have no padding…are these comfy enough for daily use? I don’t need to carry a laptop but picnic bits, kids spare clothes, drink bottles etc.
would it work for days out with the kids or do I need to go for a more outdoor type backpack?

Any advice is appreciated x

Osprey Daylite Plus

Comes in some lovely colours and has really good straps and back ventilation etc.

It's a bit 'hikery' but it's my favourite everyday bag and carries everything from water to battery bank to wipes to spare hoodies.

Tbf I've not had a Roka backpack, but I have looked at the Canfield and not gone for it because the straps look like they'd dig in after a short time.

Iheartmysmart · 01/08/2024 19:49

I sent my Roka back for that very reason. The straps were horribly uncomfortable even when the backpack was empty.

I got a Roka bag in their bargain sale, it was £30 I think but arrived in the most revolting custard yellow colour imaginable - and I've tried twice to wear it on a day out but it's horribly uncomfortable. It's been flung to the back of the cupboard in disgust and I use my Kipling backpack instead. That's so comfy and adjustable, washes in the machine and is waterproof. Was a far better investment!

Thank you everyone, this answers my question! The hunt goes on for the perfect backpack…I’ll have a look at the osprey ones any other suggestions?

I commute to work on public transport every day- 2 buses in and out. I carry everything comfortably (including laptop) in a Nordace Sienna backpack. Lots of pockets for organising your stuff and really lightweight- it’s not the prettiest bag in the world but it does a good job. It’s not cheap though.

If you go on you tube and search for:
Gear By Orlaigh

She's done tons of reviews of backpacks. And she tries them on and sees how they fit the female body.

However. If you just want a nice looking back pack for picnics with the kids. Checkout:

I got one in the sale 🐑 and I use it for work. I don't find the straps uncomfortable although they look like they would be. I do find it heavy though, or heavier than a cheap nylon Decathlon one.

Patagonia Refugio

From vinted

I've got a Wolfskin back pack that is specifically designed for women. It's so comfortable. I've used it loads and lent it to other people for holidays. Had it years and it's still perfect

Nomo bags are really nice

SabrinaThwaite · 01/08/2024 20:44

I have Rab / Lowe Alpine Tensor backpacks, which I find great for days out - they come in different sizes (I have 10l and a 15l ones, but the 20l looks good too).

I have a Roka backpack and can get on with the unpadded straps OK for a while, but the bigger problem is that they’re not ventilated so you’ll get a super sweaty back on a hot day.

EasilyDisturbed · 01/08/2024 20:48

I find the unpadded straps ok but mine has got metal adjusting rings on the straps which sit at chest height and dig into the tops of my arms when wearing short sleeves or vests. I only use it for short journeys and don't carry it all day.

CottonwoolCubes · 01/08/2024 20:52

I have several Rokas and use them a lot. I have carried heavy loads and not found the straps a problem at all. Some of mine have been used for years and are still going strong.

Elderlydogsrus · 02/08/2024 13:45

Thanks everyone…does anyone have the kind backpack that looks pretty similar to the Roka but with padded straps?

Im struggling as I do tend wear midi dresses so I don’t know how the more hiking styles will look.

Does eastpak work ? Lots of colours / patterns and comfortable and almost indestructible

SabrinaThwaite · 02/08/2024 13:54

Fjallraven Kanken might work - you can buy separate padded straps to go with them.

I'm really fussy with straps, my shoulders and back, but have no problem with them. Why not buy a vinted one and try out the straps, before buying new.

Elderlydogsrus · 03/08/2024 20:33

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve ordered a backpack from passenger…fingers crossed I like it!
