Very old makeup

How long can I keep makeup? I have eye shadow palettes that are at least 6 years old, lipstick that could be 20 years old, tinted moisturiser/foundAtion/powder etc which are probably 6 years old. None of them smell off but my teen daughter is telling me to buy new because they're probably not best now. Although I suspect she wants me to buy new so she can use it, is it necessary?

There is an indication on the back of many products that tells you how long they are good for after opening, although if they smell fine, and the liquids haven’t separated so are still stable, I happily still use them beyond that.

I would ditch it. I used a lipstick the other week that was 10 years old. It looked fine but I had a reaction to it.

It was a discontinued colour which is why I’d hung on to it.

I think the “best before” indicators on it are over zealous but I do think 5 years plus once opened is enough.

I have some ancient nail polish though which seems fine but it’s full of chemicals and is probably good through a nuclear winter.

I use eyeshadows for years, I just make sure I clean the brushes regularly. Foundation I would chuck after a year

Lipstick smells rancid if it’s gone off. Some brands seem to last for years like Revlon, Estée Lauder, Dior, Max Factor while some like Bobbi brown & Clinique smell disgusting in very short time. Mascara dries up. Powders like compacts, blushers & eyeshadows can last forever . If they’ve gone a bit shiny on top, if they’ve got a bit of oil on from brushes, they are completely fine if you scrape the top surface off.

I'm still using a powder eyeshadow palette that's a good 40 years old.

If it's something you use then I'd keep using it until it was finished, it smells funny or you reacted to it.

The only thing I replace regularly (but not three monthly which is, I think, the recommended) is mascara. I've had reactions from that in the past.

I had one of the blusher which can as little balls in a container, it old around 10 years, went to use it the other day, and I crushed one of the balls it was black in the middle, in the bin it went.

Yves san Laurent concealer touche eclat is downright dangerous if it gets old. I noticed it smelled a bit odd but used it anyway (stupid I know) my eyes swelled up and my skin went red and scaly. It was awful. Turns out it's a common reaction to that product, once it goes over three months of being opened. Anything creamy is in danger of going off, powders less so.

I’m wearing my beloved Clinique Ruby Glass lipstick today that I got 17 years ago - it was my beautiful wedding lipstick and I’m so upset it’s discontinued. Would never throw it out!!!

Treat yourself. Throw it out and buy some new 🤗
