Is it just me?

I enjoy looking at the queries on Mumsnet, but can't help thinking why?

Motheroftwo asks for help with a dress for a work do, and gives a budget of £200 - why? - Imanidiot suggests a Louis Vitton dress for £750, or Imbetterthanyou suggests a jumpsuit for £195. What the hell is wrong with a dress from M&S for £50, or one in the sale at Yours for £25?

Ineedideas asks for help with a plain white boxy t-shirt, Superspender suggests one from some obscure designer that costs £150 - what's wrong with the identical Sainsburys Tu one for £5.50?

It seems to me that some people have more money than sense!

I love Erdem.

My "is it just me" is the current thread trying to persuade a step- mother from wearing a rather nice trouser suit to a wedding (and I'm not even a fan of trouser suits) and wear a jumpsuit instead. Each jumpsuit suggestion seems to be trying to outdo the previous one for its horrendousness.

I know everyone has different tastes, each to their own, blah, blah, but with one exception (another trouser suit) I don't understand why anyone would want to wear any of the jumpsuits. They manage to be fussy and drab at the same time.

I don't think the Style and Beauty board is for you. Not everything is for everyone.

What amazes me us the price of some dresses that don't look anything special.
I'm looking in particular at the Royal / celebrity favourite Erdem.
He has designed some things in ghastly fabrics that cost £ thousands.

Have you seen and felt and tried them on though? They are beautifully crafted and so stunning irl

@Sobetterthanyouatthis

I have to say that until I came to S&B I had no idea that so many women in the UK base their clothing choices entirely on the goal of hiding perceived bodily faults.
I was on a thread about this a month or so ago. It was crazy how many people seemed to think anyone who found this a sad thing to do was somehow a bully 🫤

Sobetterthanyouatthis · 02/08/2024 05:45

Indeed …

Garlicfest · 02/08/2024 05:54

I like this thread! I agree with everybody, which has got to be a first on S&B 😂

The wildly ranging scope of posts here is what I enjoy about it. I am - erm, surprised by the dull, frumpy, badly-made garments often recommended to slim & shapely young women looking for a special occasion outfit, but at least they give me a laugh. I find most threads stimulating, interesting and informative to varying degrees.

I used to work with fashion and, although I'm a million miles from that now, still love Fashion As Self-Expression, Darling, It's Art! I'm particularly grateful to the S&B regulars who keep up to speed with what's good and what's new "on real women's backs", as I can't get that from Vogue and I live in semi-rural purgatory. Of course, this means I have to shop online; without you lot, I'd have no clue where to look!

Then again, without you lot I wouldn't keep spending my very limited funds on mid-price wearables, when nobody round here gives a shit if I'm flaunting sustainably sourced linen or polyester steeped in the sweat of Uyghur slaves. My way's more fun, though, so, thank you all!

As i get older the more I value nice fabrics and well made clothing. It’s unlikely that I’m going to find that it a £25 dress from the High Street. Fast fashion doesn’t offer that. If you ever come across old St Michael garments you’d see how superior they are to modern M&S items. I think it’s depressing how often fast fashion is recommended on here… I can’t say I’m recommending £80 T shirts either but if someone has a £200 budget for a dress they’re obviously in the market for something a little nicer.

Yes. I buy Toast in the sale or on EBay. That’s around the £200 for a new dress price point. The quality is worth the price IMO.

I buy St Michael on EBay and Vinted. The quality of some of it is phenomenal compared to nowadays and it’s made in the UK.

I’ve got nothing against M&S but I don’t think they are the best value. I’d rather get the gems from Primark or Sainsburys (they do exist) and spend hardly anything and also work a bit harder getting quality stuff.

The thing about S&B is that lots of people who ask for help don’t know as much about clothes and shopping as some of the people on the board and are often in a hurry. Then you’ve got the ‘I never spend more than a fiver’ polyester brigade, some glam types who think anything plain or simple is frumpy, some people who are into high fashion, and some people whose only yardstick is whether something is ‘flattering’, even if it screams ‘I haven’t looked at a fashion magazine since 2003’.

@Garlicfest i am also in deepest rural land. Except near me are a serious number of private schools, I work in one and send DC to another.

Which means that I can spot a bit of sustainably sourced linen and there are roving eyes everywhere who can do the same.

With special reference to the sweaty betty/lulu lemon/Alo leggings choices.

Its def the extremists that stand out on this thread! Those who will only wear designer or bargain basement stuff or who would spontaneously combust if a mad made fibre touched their bodies!!

Personally I cant buy the expensive stuff (even on Vinted Im still looking for mid range stuff at cheap prices). I have no issue if somebody wants to spend all their cash on a dress, their choice...
But I often look at some suggestions and think about wether you can wear a bra, will it crease, is it a pain to wash, etc. Im just boringly practical!😄
