How to recreate the best dress ever?

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 27/07/2024 22:19

I had this dress: Y.A.S. best dress of all time

I say had, because I wore it once, and it was trashed- the pattern is printed on white satin, so one tiny pulled thread and it turns white, very obviously snagged and the pattern is ruined, and believe me when I say you only have to look at it to snag it. It's fucked and my kids want it for fancy dress.

But...it's gorgeous. I felt so great wearing it! It's comfy, beautiful, fancy and fun and I've never had a dress so nice. How possible would it be to try and recreate it in a different fabric? Would a dressmaker be able to do that? Does that kind of print even exist in another fabric? Shall I just chalk it up to one great night, never to be repeated?

Yes a dressmaker can make an exact copy for you. I've done this before if I want to recreate the cut of a dress.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 27/07/2024 22:26

Definitely talk to a dressmaker as they could recreate it and advise on the type of fabric to look for as I would imagine you wouldn't find the exact one

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 28/07/2024 00:01

Is it just one thread? Would anyone apart from you notice?

AnchorWHAT · 29/07/2024 12:51

Could you use felt tips to colour the white threads?

I thought that too.

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 29/07/2024 22:41

It's loads of threads and really noticeable sadly. I hadn't thought of felt tips, thank you (even though I've done the Sharpie on my leg for tights thing!) Will give it a go but the snags have also rucked up the material so it may have limited success...

You will notice it far more than anyone else. I bet I wouldn't notice if I saw the dress in real life , or if I did it would like those disclaimers you see like this

"The weaving & threads visible in different directions is an inherent characteristic or feature of that fabric and proof of its authenticity. These are not defects. This raw finish is the beauty of handcrafted products. So, the same theme products may have minor variations"

Edit, I'm not saying that just to make you feel better. It's a beautiful dress. I genuinely think either (a) I wouldn't notice ;(b) disclaimer above applies or (c) oh it's snagged, no big deal, it'll happen with that type of material. I wouldn't stop wearing it.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 30/07/2024 00:07

Given you have the actual dress, a dressmaker could easily replicate the pattern.

I'm the same as you, I couldn't wear something with that sort of damage.

Was it where your handbag was? I'm?3 learned to be careful with bags and jewellery and the type of fabric of dresses due to the same thing happening to me.

18daychallenge · 30/07/2024 00:23

Love it! Im not sure what size yours is, but they have the same style in a slightly different pattern on Vinted.

JMAngel1 · 30/07/2024 05:16

You should have taken it back. After one wear, that’s crazy.

ABirdsEyeView · 30/07/2024 10:56

Don't give it to your kids for dress up until a dressmaker has seen it and copied it exactly how you want it

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 30/07/2024 16:46

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle thanks- maybe if I wear it enough it'll get a sort of deliberate distressed look?!

@OrderOfTheKookaburra no, I think the table gently brushed it while I was having dinner. A smooth table too, it wasn't like I was eating off a tea crate or anything!

@18daychallenge Sadly I haven't been a "S" since about 2001, also I've already got another one from Vinted in a different style!

@JMAngel1 I shoulda, but it's from a town 200 miles away that I visited and I didn't keep the receipt...

Thanks all for the ideas! might give it another outing and see if I get away with it!

Just saw this in a guardian fashion article and it made me think of your dress - the split not so great though

I have no suggestions but I love the dress!

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2024 15:17

I'd still wear it, but in your position I'd get a seamstress to recreate the dress in a more durable fabric, and if you are happy with the copy get a few dresses made. I'd suggest a light wool crepe for autumn/winter and a light cotton for summer.

teaandyarn · 11/11/2024 15:27

Pretty sure there is a Vogue pattern which is almost the same design

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2024 15:43

I was thinking that. It looks vaguely familiar.

If you are getting it made from a dewing pattern, check the pattern measurements carefully. Sewing pattern sizes are not the same as shop bought sizes. Size 14 is about a shop size10.

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2024 15:50

sewing not dewing My sewing is almost as bad as my typing Smile

Mipil · 11/11/2024 15:59

It’s more the rucked up fabric that is noticeable than the white thread. Have you tried gently pulling it back? I think it will be a lot less obvious if the fabric is flattened.

The dress shape is pretty simple and classic. I am sure there are a million patterns like that out there already. You wouldn’t even need a dressmaker to cut their own pattern.
