Brit in Canada - where do you buy clothes?

I'm British, but have been living in Canada for over a decade. Never really found any Canadian clothes shops that I love, mainly because the choice in our town is limited to Winners, Walmart and Reitmans. I order a lot of stuff online from my favourite British shops Monsoon, Next, White Stuff and, recently (incredibly) M&S. Was back in the UK recently and got a gorgeous dress in Sea Salt Cornwall for £75. It's available in Canada via Next for $217 (approx £135 because of duties etc). So I've realised how much I'm overpaying for things by ordering in this way. Can anyone recommend great Canadian brands that are available online that I can try?

I'll preface this by saying I'm not fashionable at all, LOL, but I buy quite a lot of stuff from RW & Co. Have you had a look at their website?
Oh, and the odd thing from Banana Republic too.

I'm posting here because as a Canadian, I would also really like to know!

I used to buy most of my clothing from RW & Co, but the quality of their clothing has declined in recent years. I have some clothing from them that is 5 - 10 years old and still in good condition, but it seems that everything they sell now is mostly made of polyester and elastane. (Their newer clothing all looks nice, but doesn't feel comfortable to wear and stretches out quickly.) I've had some luck finding older RW &Co items on Poshmark, though, and I agree that Banana Republic is occasionally good.

I've also found the occasional nice item at Tentree and at either Oak + Fort or Frank and Oak (not actually sure which of the "Oak" brands, but I had an excellent t-shirt from one of them that I wore until it wore out). Aritizia is also very popular where I live, although I personally have never found anything that I really liked there.

I’m going through a Sezane phase at the moment.

I always stock up on clothes when I visit Canada, usually getting them from the large outlets, but also from The Bay and Laura. I miss Sears.

You are right though, M&S would do well as there is a gap in the market.

It's funny that you stock up on clothes when you visit Canada and I do it when I'm back in the UK! I had some things from Laura years ago - must have a look at it again. Thanks!

M&S used to be in Canada and bombed unfortunately so closed all stores.

Arg, just paid the COD on a Frasers delivery so I know what you mean.

Canadian brands I like include Poppy Barley (more footwear than clothes), Emmy Deveaux, and Aritzia. I used to shop exclusively at Banana Republic but not so much anymore. Lululemon and Lole are useful for athletic wear. Enjoy The Bay as well for their huge selection and range.

Shopgirl1 · 09/11/2024 19:46

I visit Canada a couple of times a year and always pick up something in Lululemon (much cheaper in Canada) and often also Aritzia - I like their contour tops range and also have a few superpuff items - a gillet and gloves, as well as a cropped jacket. I used to like knitwear in Aritzia or their brands too, but it’s not so good anymore.

I shop mainly at Aritzia, Uniqlo, Banana Republic, Everlane, and a bit at J Crew (less so now that they are US only). Gap is ok for jeans. I do find that mid-price point, decent clothes are missing in Canada.

Do you have a Suzy Shier or Le Chateau near you?
They are owned by the same company and lean towards a younger demographic, but do have things for all ages.

One of my favourite stores used to be LOFT, they closed their Canadian shops few years back but now The Bay is stocking it.

Gap for jeans is always a good deal.

My current favourite is Simons the department store, they stock mainly their own designs aimed at different age groups and different price points, also great selection of sleepwear, shoes, accessories, bags. If there isn't a store near you their online service is good.

Uniqlo is good for plain basics as is Frank and Oak.

We do have Fat Face here now which is a bit hit and miss and fuddy duddy though usually some nice knitwear for winter.

I still like the odd thing from Joe Fresh.
